Job summary

City of Shawnee is seeking a Division Chief of Community Risk Reduction / Fire Marshal to lead the CRR Division and oversee fire prevention, inspections, permits, and code compliance. The role requires strong leadership, strategic direction, and collaboration with public and private stakeholders to shape the city’s safety programs.

The candidate will manage inspections, plan reviews, and staff development, while maintaining records, data systems, and training initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Ten years of fire service experience with supervisory responsibilities preferred.
• KS EMT (any level) certification or NREMT with ability to obtain Kansas licensure on hire.
• Pro Board or IFSAC certifications: HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, Firefighter I, Firefighter II.
• Fire Inspector and Fire Plan Review certifications within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Leads and manages the Community Risk Reduction Division; directs daily fire prevention activities, inspections, plan reviews, and permits.
• Interprets fire codes and provides technical guidance to professionals and staff.
• Reviews building plans and calculations for code compliance; conducts fire and life safety inspections.
• Investigates origins and causes, testifies in court when required; serves as evidence custodian.
• Trains department personnel; maintains records and data for pre-incident planning.
