Qualifications

• General Application Requirements: You must submit a complete application with education, work experience, and completed supplemental questions.
• Disqualifications based on these requirements are not subject to a Civil Service appeal.
• Must currently hold the permanent rank of Firefighter in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire as of August 10, 2026.
• Must be employed by the City of Pittsburgh and remain until time of appointment.
• Requires a valid PA Driver's License (Class A, B, or C) at filing and continued throughout employment.
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Responsibilities

• Manages activities aimed at fire suppression, protection, prevention, rescue services and first responder operations within the City.
• Directs the activities of assigned personnel.
• Responsible for the safety of Firefighters and assumes command at fire ground until relieved by a senior officer.
• Responds to emergency calls to extinguish fires, perform rescues and handle hazardous materials incidents.
• Ensures safety rules and procedures are followed; operates and maintains fire apparatus and equipment.
• Inspects districts for fire prevention effectiveness and coordinates preplanned procedures.
• Maintains records and prepares reports; participates in drills and public education activities.
