Job summary

The City of Hampton is seeking an EMT-I/Paramedic with at least one year of progressive EMS experience to deliver advanced life support and emergency medical care in a 911 setting for residents and visitors of Hampton. You will work under the Operational Medical Doctor, coordinate with fire, police, and hospitals, and help train EMS personnel as needed.

Requirements include EMT-I or Paramedic certification (Virginia) and BLS/ACLS/PALS or PEPP as applicable, plus driver’s license and successful

  • Requires Virginia EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I) certification or Paramedic certification.
  • Minimum of one year of progressive EMS experience.
  • Must complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator’s course.
  • Must complete NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.

Responsibilities

  • Administer emergency medical, basic and advanced life support in 911 setting.
  • Respond to emergency medical calls and provide ALS patient care.
  • Safely transport patients and document in ePCR system.
  • Coordinate with public safety agencies during incidents.

YOU will administer emergency medical, basic, and advanced life support services in a 911 setting to the members and visitors of our Hampton community under the direction of our Operational Medical Doctor.

Typical Tasks
  • Respond to emergency medical calls and provide advanced pre-hospital patient care.
  • Assess patients, administer medications, perform advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV/IO access, and other ALS interventions.
  • Safely transport patients and communicate patient information to receiving medical facilities.
  • Complete electronic patient care reports (ePCR) and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Operate ambulances and emergency response vehicles.
  • Maintain an inventory of medical equipment, supplies, medications, and controlled substances.
  • Clean, inspect, and ensure ambulances and equipment are operational.
  • Coordinate with fire, police, hospitals, and other public safety agencies during emergency incidents.
  • Assist with training EMS personnel and serve as a Field Training Officer when assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to successful completion of the Virginia Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate or Paramedic Program with certification.
  • Requires a minimum of one year of progressive EMS experience.
  • Must complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator’s course.
  • Must complete NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Must maintain current Virginia EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I) certification at a minimum. Virginia Paramedic certification is strongly preferred and is required to function independently as Attendant-in-Charge on ALS units per HDFR protocols.
  • Must possess and maintain the following certifications
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR),
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS);
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP), when required.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must complete pre-employment background and drug testing screening, including, but not limited to, a polygraph examination, Department of Social Services, Office of EMS, and State Police.
  • Must participate in a physical fitness and/or work-performance evaluation when required.
  • Must complete an annual medical fitness-for-duty evaluation as required by the Department.
Additional Requirements
  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Duties may be performed on various shifts to include 8, 12, and 24-hour shifts, and 40-48 hours per workweek. Overtime is authorized for hours worked over 40 hours per workweek.
  • The incumbent will be considered “essential personnel” during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
