The Finance FP&A Senior Manager is a key member of Vertex's Financial Planning & Analysis organization, providing financial direction and strategic insight to the key functional finance leaders. Supporting the Research & Development (R&D) organization, this role will help define and deliver against short term and long-term goals, including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs. The role is instrumental in providing strategic decision support, influencing decisions and identifying opportunities to invest, save costs and mitigate risks on a global basis.

This position is based in our Boston, MA office, located in the Seaport area. This role requires a hybrid work schedule: 3 days in office & 2 days remote on a weekly basis.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the consolidated financial planning process for R&D (budget, forecast, long range plan) to provide meaningful forward-looking direction, develop key scenarios, and identify risks/uncertainties and plans for potential mitigation.
  • Lead the financial performance management process for R&D (target setting, budget vs. actuals, etc), including the monthly forecast process, with a focus on understanding the key drivers of short-term performance and communicating the range of possible outcomes.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports and presentations for senior management, highlighting key financial performance indicators (KPIs) and trend analysis.
  • Conduct portfolio-level financial reviews to identify risks, opportunities, and resource allocation priorities and opportunities.
  • Provide financial direction and strategic insight to the R&D functional finance leaders. Help to define and deliver against short term and long-term goals, including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs.
  • Provide strategic decision support, influencing decisions and identifying opportunities to invest, save costs and mitigate risks on a global basis.
  • Guide a team of Finance Business Partners to ensure coherent financial analysis and alignment across functions - responsibilities also include staff training and development, defining and evolving roles and responsibilities to meet business needs.
  • Partner with our Corporate FP&A team, Accounting, HR and other functions to ensure there is clear ownership and management of the deliverables from those teams and that Finance services are delivered seamlessly to the business.
  • Ensure financial integrity and robust corporate governance and compliance of all financial aspects for areas of responsibility.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong analytical and financial skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions-especially portfolio analysis, valuation, ROI/ROIC, and complex business questions.
  • Ability to lead and drive change in a developing business environment, coordinating processes involving large numbers of people, complex systems, and tight deadlines across multiple time zones.
  • Expert technology and systems skills in MS Office and financial software applications, including Hyperion.
  • Strong communication, influencing and interpersonal skills necessary for daily interaction with senior management, as well as business partners and peers within Finance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting and finance principles, financial modeling and valuations with strong financial analysis, interpretation skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or an equivalent qualification. MBA preferred.
  • Typically requires 8+ finance, accounting, or a related field, with a strong understanding of R&D finance principles.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry strongly preferred.

Pay Range:

$131,200 - $196,800

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
