Job summary

Building Bright Futures of Vermont seeks a Controller to lead financial operations and ensure accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and grant compliance across the organization. This full-time position works with the Executive Director, Business Manager, and Senior Development Manager to support sustainability and growth.

Responsibilities include overseeing monthly/annual reporting, budgeting, and grant revenue forecasting, plus auditing and Form 990 filing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required or equivalent experience.
• Five+ years nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting preferred.
• Experience with grant budgeting and reporting (federal/state/private).
• Strong proficiency in QuickBooks, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Oversee monthly and annual financial reporting, including statements of financial position and cash flows.
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow scenario planning.
• Ensure grant compliance for restricted and unrestricted funds; manage fund accounting.
• Reconcile and forecast contributed and grant revenue with the Senior Development Manager.
• Establish internal controls, fiscal policies, and risk management practices.
• Lead annual audit and Form 990 filing processes.
• Coordinate with Business Manager to evaluate finance systems for growth.
• Translate complex financial concepts for non-finance staff and Board members.

Building Bright Futures is a nonprofit with a $2.4M budget that works to improve the well-being of each and every child and family in Vermont, from the prenatal period through age 8. We bring together a network of policymakers, early childhood professionals, educators, health and mental health providers, business leaders, families, and other partners to share insights and problem-solve through community and statewide councils.

We empower and elevate family and community voices as partners in decision-making and centralize and disseminate early childhood data to inform policy and public understanding.

About the position

Building Bright Futures (BBF) seeks a Controller to lead our financial operations and ensure accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and grant compliance across the organization. This full-time (1.0 FTE) position is supervised by the Executive Director and works closely with the Business Manager and Senior Development Manager to support organizational sustainability and growth.

We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys the detailed work of nonprofit accounting but doesn’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Someone who can close the books accurately one day and help the Executive Director think through a three-year funding scenario the next. This role suits a person who is comfortable being the only finance expert in the room, isn’t afraid to flag a problem before it becomes a crisis, and can explain a budget variance to a program director. You should be someone who takes real satisfaction in clean books and clear answers, and who cares about the mission enough to want to understand how the money supports the work, not just how it’s recorded.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $87,000 - $100,000 annually (full-time), with starting salary dependent on experience. A part-time role will be considered as is feasible. Benefits include generous paid time off (including Fridays off from June through August), health care insurance, dental and vision insurance, retirement, and a monthly remote work stipend.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee monthly and annual financial reporting, including statements of financial position, activities, cash flows, and functional expenses
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow scenario planning
• Provide oversight of restricted and unrestricted fund accounting and ensure grant compliance
• Partner with the Senior Development Manager to reconcile and forecast contributed and grant revenue
• Establish and maintain internal controls, fiscal policies, and risk management practices
• Lead the annual audit and ensure timely, accurate Form 990 filing
• Coordinate with the Business Manager and evaluate finance systems to support the organization as it grows
• Translate financial concepts clearly for staff, program leads, and Board members without finance backgrounds.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or five years of relevant professional experience in accounting or finance; CPA licensure strongly preferred
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting
• Experience budgeting, tracking, and reporting on multiple grants, including federal, state, and private funding sourcesExperience preparing for and managing an organizational audit and Form 990 filing
• Strong proficiency in QuickBooks, Google Suite, and Microsoft Suite
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data strategically
• Comfort working directly with development and fundraising staff on revenue reconciliation and reporting
