Job description

A well-established, growing engineering firm is seeking a high-potential Controller to join its leadership team. This is an exceptional opportunity for a CPA currently working in public accounting—or someone with a strong public/private accounting mix—to transition into a highly visible corporate leadership position. The organization is specifically interested in a bright, intellectually curious accounting professional who understands financial reporting, controls and audit standards and is ready to expand into broader operational finance. Direct engineering or construction industry experience is not required. The company is willing to invest in training the right individual on industry-specific accounting practices.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will work closely with the executive leadership team and have meaningful exposure to the organization’s financial strategy, operational performance, and continued growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the company’s day-to-day accounting and financial reporting activities
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly and annual close processes
  • Prepare and review financial statements and management reporting
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and applicable accounting standards
  • Partner with external auditors and coordinate annual audit activities
  • Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies and financial procedures
  • Oversee general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries and account analysis
  • Support budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow analysis
  • Provide the CFO and executive leadership with meaningful financial and operational insights
  • Assist with system enhancements, automation and process-improvement initiatives
  • Develop a deeper understanding of project accounting, work in progress and the financial dynamics of the engineering and construction sectors
  • Support and mentor members of the accounting team
  • Participate in special projects related to growth, system integration and organizational transformation

Qualifications

  • Active CPA license required
  • Public accounting experience required
  • Approximately five or more years of progressive accounting experience
  • Public/private accounting combination strongly preferred, although professionals currently in public accounting are encouraged to apply
  • Strong technical accounting, financial reporting and audit foundation
  • Experience working with privately held, middle-market or project-based clients is beneficial
  • Previous supervisory or team-lead experience preferred
  • Advanced Excel and financial systems capabilities
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent executive-level communication and presentation abilities

Preferred Skills

  • Public/private accounting combination strongly preferred
  • Experience working with privately held, middle-market or project-based clients is beneficial
  • Previous supervisory or team-lead experience preferred
