Job summary

National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) in Washington, DC is seeking a Controller to lead the Finance Department. The role oversees accounting, payroll, grant reporting, budgeting, audits, and internal controls, reporting to the CFO and coordinating with the COO.

The incumbent will manage a small team and support pension and tax compliance. The position offers a 32-hour work week, comprehensive benefits, and growth opportunities within a mission-driven nonprofit.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business with a major in accounting.
• CPA preferred.
• Eight years accounting experience in public or corporate accounting, 501(c) experience preferred.
• Experience in productive, positive staff management, including managing dispersed teams.
• Experience with Grant accounting is a plus.
• Superior ability to create reports using accounting software, Sage 300 Intelligence and/or Crystal Reports preferred.
• Excellent Excel and other Microsoft software application skills (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
• Excellent writing and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee A/P, cash receipts, payroll, grant reporting and reconciliations with CFO review.
• Process, review and distribute monthly departmental financial reports; assist in budgeting.
• Develop, train, evaluate, and coach accounting staff (team of four with three direct reports).
• Lead special projects including budgeting input, lease administration, and CFO/board meeting preparations.
• Oversee annual audits and pension plan compliance with auditors and consultants.
• Review and enforce internal controls and SOPs to safeguard assets and ensure policy compliance.
• Manage all accounting for the National Parks Action Fund (NPAF) and coordinate budget templates.
• Participate in organizational meetings and support goal setting and performance reporting.
