Job summary

The City of Durham is recruiting a Utility Locator for the Environmental & Street Services Department. This field-based role locates and marks water, sewer, and storm drains, maintains locating equipment, and supports safe excavation in the community.

Candidates will join a team focused on public safety, accurate record-keeping, and on-call responsiveness. A valid NC driver's license and prior utility-locating experience are required, with opportunities for growth and stable benefits.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of related experience locating utilities.
• Valid, unrestricted NC driver’s license or willingness to obtain NC license within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Plan and route daily work for utility locating, staking, and equipment maintenance.
• Maintain equipment, supplies, and vehicles; perform system checks and calibration.
• Prepare and maintain routine reports and field notes; enter data into systems.
• Locate and mark City water, sewer, and storm drain systems.
• Use GIS to research and verify work orders; perform on-call duties as rotating shift.
