Job summary

Lincoln County EMS is seeking a Field Training Officer/Paramedic Grade 18 to provide field training for department personnel and administer Paramedic-level emergency medical treatment to victims of accidents and other life-threatening situations. This role supports the orientation of new employees, conducts skills tests, performs quality assurance reviews, and ensures on-site care and accurate reporting.

Qualifications

• Specialized EMS training and education requirements, basic public safety credentials.
• 1–3 years’ experience in EMS or related service.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain.
• State EMS certifications including NC Paramedic and NR Paramedic, plus instructor certification as applicable.
• SOG 104-02 certification must be obtainable.

Field Training Officer/Paramedic Grade: 18

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing field training for department personnel and for administering Paramedic-level emergency medical treatment to victims of accidents and other life-threatening situations.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Assists with the orientation of new employees.
• Assists the Training Coordinator with administering skills tests, technical scope of practice evaluations, and other testing for shift and system providers as requested.
• Conducts quality assurance reviews of charts from previous shift as directed.
• Monitors the clinical competence of technicians on assigned shift; reports identified deficiencies and suggested remedial intervention to the Training Coordinator.
• Assists the Shift Supervisor with daily operations; performs the duties of the Shift Supervisor in his or her absence as assigned.
• Responds to calls for assistance involving emergency medical situations, including cardiac problems, breath difficulties, childbirth, strokes, seizures, sports and automobile accidents, and other traumatic and medical incidents.
• Obtains medical histories and current event information; determines appropriate aid and response guidelines.
• Provides general medical care and treatment at the Paramedic-level to patients in an emergency situation as defined by state and local regulations.
• Administers medication and therapy or treatment to patients on site or in transit.
• Completes required reports.
• Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Shift Supervisor and/or Training Coordinator assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include NCOEMS rules, OSHA regulations, HIPAA regulations, NFPA standards, DEA guidelines, certification and training requirements, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of varied training, administrative, and emergency medical response duties. The necessity of responding to unforeseen emergencies contributes to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to provide training to department personnel and to provide emergency medical services to the general public. Successful performance helps ensure the effective and efficient delivery of emergency services to the public.

CONTACTS

• Contacts are typically with co workers, students, and other county personnel, medical professionals, other emergency responders, and members of the general public.
• Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, motivate and train persons, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office and at emergency scenes. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position may have functional supervision over assigned personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Associate degree preferred.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate state EMS certification(s), including NC Paramedic and NR Paramedic certifications and appropriate instructor certification(s).
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification as described in SOG 104-02.
