JOB SUMMARY

This position assists in supervising and participates in the work of an assigned shift of personnel in the delivery of emergency medical services to the general public.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Assists in supervising the work of EMS personnel on an assigned shift; performs the duties of the Shift Supervisor in his or her absence.
  • Assists in ensuring appropriate coverage of the county with EMS resources and personnel.
  • Promotes high performance with positive motivation, effective communication, leadership, and quality mentorship.
  • Implements Incident Command System at all major events.
  • Obtains medical histories and current event information; determines appropriate aid and response guidelines.
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate electronic databases.
  • Provides general medical care and treatment at the Paramedic-level to patients in an emergency situation as defined by state and local regulations.
  • Communicates with medical personnel via 2-way radio and telephone regarding injured persons\' condition, vitals, and other relevant treatment information.
  • Assists in ensuring that all units, equipment, and stations are property equipped, supplied, and maintained.
  • Assists in the evaluation of assigned personnel.
  • Completes reports and reviews reports prepared by subordinate personnel.
  • Assists and/or participates in training exercises and continuing education to maintain certification.
  • Attends public functions to provide emergency medical response as needed.
  • Provides public safety demonstrations and screenings as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Assistant Shift Supervisor assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The Assistant Shift Supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include NCOEMS rules, OSHA regulations, HIPAA regulations, NFPA standards, DEA guidelines, certification and training requirements, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied supervisory and emergency medical duties. The necessity of responding to unforeseen emergencies contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to participate in and assist in supervising the work of an assigned shift of emergency medical service personnel.Successful performance helps ensure the effective and efficient delivery of emergency services to the general public.

  • Contacts are typically with co workers, vendors, physicians, hospital personnel, other emergency service providers, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate personnel, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and at both indoor and outdoor emergency scenes. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, respiratory protection, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with an Associate degree.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina or current state of residence for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate state EMS certification(s), including NC Paramedic, NR Paramedic certifications, and a BLS course completion card.
  • Completion of ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 or ability to readily obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Completion of Quick Response Vehicle Program or ability to readily obtain within 6 months of hire.
