Job description

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate protective service and technical work in providing emergency medical care and transportation of sick and injured under emergency conditions; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Emergency Medical Services Director.

Responding to emergency calls, providing emergency medical services and transportation; preparing and maintaining detailed records.

The following functions are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Responds to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit driver or attendant; performs necessary rescue work to move patients into medical unit.

Administers necessary emergency medical care including patient assessment; basic life support; oxygen administration; hemorrhage control; treatment for shock, bandaging and dressing of soft tissue injuries, splinting fractures and dislocations; treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck and spine; treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia; assisting in childbirth; treatment of injuries related to exposure to heat and cold; treatment of burns, etc.

Assists with the rescue of accident victims utilizing specialized equipment.

Responds to non-emergency calls such as requests to transport patients from hospitals to their homes or from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center.

Performs general maintenance work and upkeep on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.

Ensures proper supplies and equipment are stocked on assigned vehicles and that equipment is sanitary and functions properly.

Prepares and processes ambulance trip records; prepares invoices to be mailed to clients, private insurance carriers and/or Medicare and Medicaid as appropriate.

Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.

Performs related tasks as required.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by required emergency medical training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and automobile extraction and transportation; some knowledge of the street system and geography of the County; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; skill in diagnosing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, medical practitioners and the general public.

Physical Requirements

This is very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession certification as an Emergency Medical Technician issued by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners.
