Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking an Instrument Operator to support preconstruction survey work for highway projects. You will operate survey instruments, establish elevations, and collect field data to inform detailed design plans.

Under supervision of a SC registered surveyor, you will document field notes, participate in property line research, and assist with alignment and photogrammetric mapping tasks. This role requires field work and occasional weekend schedules.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; 1.5 years related experience preferred.
• Ability to operate surveying equipment and perform basic survey tasks.
• Under SC licensed land surveyor supervision, support field research and plotting.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, performs duties in a preconstruction survey crew as instrument operator; establishes line and grade for proposed highway and provides field information for design and plans.
• Operates survey equipment including total station, data collector, and level to establish elevations of benchmarks and ground controls.
• Uses level rod and prism poles to determine elevations, collect topography, and support alignment.
• Assists with robotic total stations and advanced GPS equipment.
• Maintains field notes and reduces level notes to verify elevation precision.
• Oversees operation, calibration and maintenance of basic equipment and safety tasks including placement and maintenance of signs.
• Performs courthouse and field research to locate property lines and assists in plotting property information; locates utility data in the field.
