Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience as a Superintendent (or Senior Superintendent) in heavy civil construction.
• Hands-on experience with site development, mass earthwork, grading, and underground utilities on large-scale projects.
• Proven ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
• Track record of developing and managing three-week look-ahead schedules.
• Experience supervising self-perform crews, with broad self-perform scopes preferred.
• Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills with safety focus.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of high-profile site development, excavation, mass earthwork, utility, and roadway projects from inception through completion, collaborating with senior leadership.
• Lead and mentor crews of self-perform tradespeople and field managers across mass grading, excavation, trenching, backfill, compaction, and underground utility installation.
• Build and maintain rolling three-week look-ahead schedules aligned to the project plan.
• Read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and estimates to plan crew productivity, staffing, and equipment needs by phase.
• Own day-to-day quality control for company and subcontractor work, correcting non-conforming work quickly.
• Run safety meetings and training, model safe behavior on-site, and ensure timely reporting of accidents, incidents, and near misses.
• Track daily labor hours and production against budget, review cost reports, and take corrective action on overruns.
• Identify and build succession bench strength, mentoring field managers and crew members as the department grows.
• Maintain strong relationships with owners, owners' reps, architects, and engineers throughout the project.

Join a Virginia-based heavy civil contractor that's grown 150% in revenue over the past three years and now carries an $800M backlog across 50+ active projects in the Mid-Atlantic.

You'd be stepping in to build and lead within the Field Senior Leadership function as the company continues its expansion, spearheading crews on large-scale site development, excavation, mass earthwork, utility, and roadway projects from inception through final completion and playing a direct role in the company's continued growth.

What You'll Do

What You Bring

• Hands-on experience with site development, mass earthwork, grading, and underground utilities (water, sewer, storm drainage) on large-scale projects
• Proven ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings, plans, and specifications
• A track record of developing and managing three-week look-ahead schedules
• Experience supervising self-perform crews, with a preference for candidates used to broad self-perform scopes (grading, demolition, utilities, concrete, paving) rather than subcontractor-managed work
• Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills, with a genuine commitment to jobsite safety
• Comfortable stepping into a growth-stage leadership role and building a team, not just maintaining one already in place
