Job summary

Targeted HR Consulting is assisting a well-established heavy civil contractor in Columbia, South Carolina, to hire a hands-on Superintendent with a strong background in underground utilities and site development. The role directs field operations across multiple projects, focusing on safety, quality, productivity, and client satisfaction.

Ideal candidates will lead crews, coordinate multiple sites, read and interpret construction drawings, and maintain schedules while enforcing OSHA/MSHA

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Superintendent in heavy civil construction.
  • Strong background managing underground utility installation including water systems, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, trenching and excavation.
  • Experience supervising multiple crews and projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough understanding of grading, excavation, road construction, and site development.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

Lead Field Operations for a Growing Heavy Civil Contractor

Targeted HR Consulting is partnering with a well-established heavy civil construction company to identify an experienced Superintendent with a strong background in underground utilities and site development.

This leadership role is responsible for directing field operations across multiple heavy civil projects while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, productivity, and client satisfaction. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with experience managing crews, coordinating multiple job sites, and delivering complex infrastructure projects safely and efficiently.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

Position Summary

The Superintendent directs all field operations for assigned heavy civil construction projects and is responsible for achieving safety, production, quality, and schedule objectives.

This position works closely with Project Managers, Foremen, Engineers, Owners, and Inspectors while leading multiple field crews across projects throughout Central South Carolina.

Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership
  • Direct daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects
  • Lead multiple Foremen and field crews across several job sites
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented culture focused on safety, quality, and productivity
  • Ensure projects remain on schedule and within production goals
Project Coordination
  • Attend owner meetings, preconstruction meetings, and jobsite coordination meetings
  • Coordinate equipment deliveries and material procurement
  • Work closely with Project Engineers to ensure layouts, submittals, and materials are completed on schedule
  • Schedule inspections and maintain communication with engineers and owners
  • Perform routine field inspections to monitor quality, productivity, and safety
Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce OSHA and MSHA regulations on all projects
  • Maintain erosion control compliance and inspection documentation
  • Conduct vehicle, equipment, and jobsite safety inspections
  • Lead and participate in safety meetings and required training
  • Ensure all required MSHA documentation remains current and compliant
Project Administration
  • Review and submit project timesheets for payroll
  • Communicate billing information to support timely invoicing
  • Maintain project documentation including fuel logs, load counts, equipment hours, material records, and change orders
  • Complete expense reports and company credit card documentation accurately and on time
Equipment & Crew Support
  • Coordinate heavy equipment utilization across multiple projects
  • Assist with equipment maintenance planning and emergency repairs as needed
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and mentoring of field personnel
  • Maintain company vehicle and assigned equipment in excellent condition
Required Qualifications
  • Experience as a Superintendent in heavy civil construction
  • Strong background managing underground utility installation including:
    • Water systems
    • Sanitary sewer
    • Storm drainage
    • Trenching and excavation
  • Experience supervising multiple crews and projects simultaneously
  • Thorough understanding of grading, excavation, road construction, and site development

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on commercial, industrial, municipal, or mining projects
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulations
  • Experience operating and coordinating heavy equipment including:
    • Excavators
    • Dozers
    • Motor graders
    • Wheel loaders
    • Compactors
    • Scrapers
  • Experience with erosion control compliance and site inspections

Work Environment

Travel within the region is expected based on project needs. Employees assigned to projects located more than 70 miles from their residence are eligible for the company's daily per diem program.
