Job summary

FirstEnergy Corp. is seeking a field‑oriented engineer to support maintenance, testing, and commissioning of substations up to 500 kV. The role involves extensive field work (90% outside of office) across the Towanda area and beyond, with travel within the FirstEnergy system.

The engineer will review results, prepare energization plans, and provide onsite technical guidance while collaborating with design, planning, and operations teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from ABET‑accredited program required.
• Options include PE license or ABET engineering tech degree plus advanced ABET degree.
• FE Certificate preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years engineering experience.
• Experience with substation design, maintenance or testing preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to travel within FirstEnergy system.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace per regulations and company policies.
• Commission substation equipment prior to release to operations.
• Review test results and develop energization plans to minimize risk.
• Provide field design support for minor problems encountered during projects.
• Provide onsite technical support during preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Assist in mentoring technicians and junior engineers.
• Assist in developing maintenance practices and procedures.
• Provide emergency technical support after equipment failures.
• Support storm duty and hazard response activities.
• Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams to ensure timely project completion.
