Job summary

Sterling Engineering is seeking a Field Engineer to commission power and automation systems at industrial facilities worldwide. This role involves hands-on field work, with 50% travel to client sites, and collaboration with engineering teams, clients, suppliers, and field service personnel.

You will work with AC/DC drive systems, control software, power electronics, rotating machinery, and complex control systems, ensuring successful startup and performance optimization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical/mechanical engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 2 years of experience commissioning power distribution, power electronics, or rotating machines.
• Ability to travel 50% and work independently in field environments with strong communication.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical advisory and field engineering for installation and commissioning.
• Commission AC/DC drive systems and control software to meet design specs.
• Tune closed-loop regulators for optimal performance.
• Troubleshoot complex industrial control system problems.
• Design, configure, and test system hardware and software.
• Gather technical information to determine project requirements.
• Provide commissioning status updates and report progress.
• Recommend improvements to procedures, hardware, and software.
• Support teams with system and product improvements.
• Perform system integration, testing, commissioning, and startup.
• Train client personnel on maintenance and operation.

This role combines engineering, troubleshooting, system integration, commissioning, and direct customer interaction—giving you the opportunity to see complex systems move from installation through successful startup. You’ll work with AC/DC drive systems, control software, power electronics, rotating machinery, and complex control systems, while partnering with engineering teams, clients, suppliers, and field service personnel.

Job Duties

• Provide technical advisory and field engineering services supporting equipment installation and commissioning.
• Commission AC and DC drive systems and control software to meet design and performance requirements.
• Tune closed-loop regulators to optimize equipment performance and meet design parameters.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex process and application problems involving industrial control systems.
• Design, configure, and test system hardware and software when assigned.
• Gather and evaluate technical information to determine project requirements within assigned areas of responsibility.
• Provide accurate commissioning status updates and communicate project progress to appropriate stakeholders.
• Recommend improvements to commissioning procedures, equipment performance, software, and hardware.
• Support engineering teams with recommendations for system and product improvements.
• Perform system integration, testing, debugging, commissioning, and startup activities.
• Train client personnel on system maintenance and operation to maximize equipment performance and minimize downtime.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum 2 years of experience commissioning power distribution, power electronic, and/or rotating machine products.
• Ability to travel 50% and work independently in field environments while maintaining strong communication with project and engineering teams.
