Job summary

RiverWave Broadband in Asheville, NC is seeking a skilled Fiber Technician to install, splice, terminate, and test fiber optic cables per engineering plans, both indoors and outdoors. You will troubleshoot faults and perform optical measurements using OTDRs and power meters to ensure top performance.

Responsibilities include installing ONTs and customer equipment, configuring customer devices, documenting all work, and maintaining safety standards on site.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications or training in fiber optics preferred.
• Proven experience as a Fiber Technician in telecommunications.
• Strong understanding of fiber types, connectors, splicing techniques, and testing methodologies.
• Proficient with fusion splicing equipment, OTDRs, and optical power meters.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team with strong communication.

Job Functions

This position requires daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities that must be completed promptly.

Technical

• Install, splice, terminate, and test fiber optic cables indoors and outdoors according to engineering plans and other instruction.
• Perform fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, tipping, and connecting fiber optic cables.
• Troubleshoot and repair fiber optic cable faults, including identifying and resolving issues related to fiber breaks, signal degradation, and connectivity problems.
• Connecting fiber optic jumpers and aerial/buried drops
• May require running of temporary fiber drop in a manner that does not pose a safety hazard to the public.
• Installations may require running, reusing COAX/CAT wiring, or burying up to 50 ft.

Service

• Verification of service
• Installation of ONTs, Internet / Wi-Fi routers
• Configuration of customer-owned computers and devices to the new network
• Educating customer about Internet access and customer application to manage network
• Conduct optical loss measurements and ensure fiber optic links meet performance standards via test sets such as OTDRs, optical power meters and other specialized equipment.

Safety and Administrative

• Document all installation, maintenance, and repair activities accurately and maintain comprehensive fiber optic network infrastructure records.
• Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your team members.
• Collaborate with other departments, including engineering, operations, and customer service, to support network expansion projects and resolve customer service issues.
• Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies related to fiber optic communications.

Education, Experience, and Job Requirements

This position requires at least these minimum requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications or training in fiber optics is preferred.
• Proven experience as a Fiber Technician or in a similar role within the telecommunications industry.
• Strong understanding of fiber optic cable types, connectors, splicing techniques, and testing methodologies.
• Proficiency in using fiber optic splicing equipment, fusion splicers, OTDRs, and optical power meters.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve fiber optic network issues efficiently.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with customers and colleagues, as well with professionals, such as contractors, architects, and tradespeople.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
• Time Management: ability to manage time effectively to meet project deadlines and work efficiently.
• Precision and attention to detail in fiber work to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
• Problem Solving: Fiber technicians must be able to solve technical issues and adapt to unexpected challenges during the project.
• Staying current with advancements in fiber technology and changes in building codes is essential for career development.
• Ability to work with others to resolve issues and maintain composure in a complex environment.
• Excellent teamwork experience, working in a team-orientated, collaborative environment, and leadership skills.
• Knowledge of all company policies and procedures.
• A valid driver’s license and background check are required.
