Job description

Overview

Pattyn North America, headquartered in Sussex, WI, delivers turnkey automated packaging solutions for the food & beverage, bakery, protein, bulk solids, and consumer packaged goods markets. The Lifecycle Services Department seeks a field service technician to install, service, maintain, and upgrade Pattyn packaging equipment across North America.

Position Summary

As a field service technician, you report to the Bakery Service Department Manager and are responsible for ensuring world‑class service to customers on Case Erecting, Bag Inserting, Bulk Filling, Case Closing, and Palletizing equipment. You will troubleshoot complex electrical and mechanical problems, implement minor program modifications, and perform preventive maintenance, while representing the Pattyn name with integrity.

Travel and Schedule

The role is 90% on‑site at customers’ facilities with a travel pattern of Monday morning departure, Monday afternoon on‑site, Tuesday‑Friday on site, and Friday afternoon return. Occasional weekend stays (15%–25%) are required. The position is hourly with eligibility for overtime and 10‑hour days, five days per week.

Responsibilities
  • Equipment installation, commissioning, and start‑up at customers’ locations.
  • Service and repair of equipment at customers’ locations.
  • Promote parts sales and equipment upgrades.
  • Training customers in operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Electrical and mechanical diagnosis of complex issues.
  • Implementation, installation, and evaluation of product improvements.
  • Maintain and submit visit reports and expense reports.
  • Book travel arrangements according to customer job requirements.
  • Create accurate and timely service reports and expense reports.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2–4 years industrial automation experience; additional training at Pattyn factory in Belgium and/or France required.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, automation systems, or related discipline.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • ABB and Fanuc robotics programming experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong PLC/IPC skill set for diagnosing software issues and making basic program modifications (Beckhoff TwinCAT 2/3).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
  • Strong knowledge of automation equipment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Customer service skills with effective communication.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and work independently or in a team.
  • Ability to travel across North America as required.

Physical Demands

Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and reach with arms and hands. Good visual acuity to read computer screens and fine print on various reports.

Work Environment

Approximately 90% at customers’ food production facilities (some with tree nuts and shellfish allergens) and 10% in office and warehouse settings.
