Job summary

Kiewit is seeking a Safety Specialist to support and audit safety programs across field projects. The role reports to the Project Safety Manager and focuses on implementing the Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) in the field to meet contract, client, and corporate safety standards.

The position requires coordinating with operations and craft teams, maintaining OSHA/MSHA documentation, and leading safety training and incident investigations to ensure a safe work environment on site.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction safety and current Federal and OSHA requirements.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Certification as Safety Professional or Emergency Medical Technician preferred.
  • Working knowledge of computers and familiarity with MS Word and Excel.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail; ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Strong work ethic; willingness to do what it takes to get the job done.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to access all points of a construction site in varied climates and environments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in development, review, updating, and communication of the Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) to all parties, including subcontractors.
  • Collaborate daily with craft personnel to promote safety program buy-in and ownership.
  • Exercise Stop Work responsibilities to ensure compliance with policies and work plans.
  • Plan, prioritize, and problem-solve with operations based on leading indicators and upcoming work.
  • Encourage, support, and advise staff to execute the SSSP.
  • Maintain project files in compliance with OSHA/MSHA regulations and company policies including accident/injury files.
  • Assist with first aid and maintain relationships with EMS and clinics.
  • Assist with incident investigations and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Complete daily hazard inspections and help implement corrective actions with operations and subcontractors.
  • Review work plans and detailed work packs prior to start of work.
  • Provide safety training on policies, OSHA/MSHA, NCCER, SIMS, orientation, and client requirements.
