Job summary

Gunnison Copper is seeking an experienced Senior Safety Specialist to strengthen safety at Johnson Camp Mine near Dragoon, Arizona. This site‑based role involves working with crews, supervisors, and contractors to recognize hazards, implement controls, and make sound safety decisions in mining and processing areas.

The position reports to the Director of Health, Safety and Security and requires technical credibility, coaching, and collaboration without direct reports.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related safety discipline or equivalent experience.
• At least five years of progressively responsible safety experience in mining or heavy industry.
• Experience providing direct field support to employees, supervisors, and contractors.
• Working knowledge of MSHA requirements and practical application in surface mining.
• Experience with inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, training, and corrective-action management.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a strong field presence with operating crews; discuss hazards and help resolve safety concerns.
• Strengthen critical‑risk controls around mobile equipment, energy sources, electrical systems, confined spaces, working at height, lifting and chemicals.
• Participate in pre‑shift meetings, job hazard analyses, field risk assessments, and planning for high‑risk work.
• Identify deficiencies, recommend controls, and track corrective actions to completion.
• Intervene when conditions pose unacceptable risk and help establish controls before work resumes.
• Lead or support incident and near‑miss investigations and share lessons learned.
• Deliver safety communications and training; coach supervisors and engage employees.
• Coordinate contractor and project safety expectations during construction, shutdowns, and maintenance.
• Assist with MSHA inspections, audits, health programs, drills, and safety records.
• Use observations and safety data to identify recurring risks and improve practices.
