Be visible in the field. Build trust. Help people work safely.
Gunnison Copper is seeking an experienced, hands‑on Senior Safety Specialist to strengthen safety performance at Johnson Camp Mine in southeastern Arizona.
This role puts you where the work happens—alongside employees, supervisors, and contractors in active mining, processing, and maintenance areas. You will help teams recognize hazards, establish effective controls, and make sound decisions before and during the job.
Reporting to the Director of Health, Safety and Security, you will support open‑pit copper mining, heap‑leach and innovative Nuton bioleaching activities, solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW), maintenance, and supporting operations. This is a senior individual‑contributor position with no direct reports, requiring technical credibility, practical judgment, and the ability to influence through coaching and collaboration.
What You'll Do
- Maintain a strong field presence: Spend a substantial portion of your workday engaging with operating crews, observing work, discussing hazards, and helping resolve safety concerns.
- Strengthen critical‑risk controls: Evaluate work involving mobile equipment, hazardous energy, electrical systems, confined spaces, work at height, lifting and rigging, excavation, and chemicals.
- Support safe work planning: Participate in pre‑shift meetings, job hazard analyses, field‑level risk assessments, and planning for nonroutine or higher‑risk work.
- Conduct inspections and follow through: Identify deficiencies, recommend practical controls, and track corrective actions through verified completion.
- Reinforce stop‑work authority: Intervene when conditions present unacceptable risk and help teams establish appropriate controls before work resumes.
- Investigate and share learning: Lead or support incident and near‑miss investigations, identify underlying causes, and communicate useful lessons learned.
- Coach and train: Deliver safety communications and training within your qualifications, strengthen supervisors’ safety leadership, and encourage employee participation.
- Support contractor and project safety: Coordinate expectations and monitor work during construction, equipment installation, shutdowns, and maintenance.
- Support compliance and readiness: Assist with MSHA inspections, audits, occupational health programs, emergency drills, and accurate safety records.
- Drive improvement: Use field observations, employee feedback, and safety data to identify recurring risks and improve work practices.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Mining Engineering, or a related technical discipline. An equivalent combination of relevant education, professional training, and substantial mining or industrial safety experience may be considered.
- At least five years of progressively responsible safety experience in mining, mineral processing, heavy industry, construction, or a similarly hazardous operating environment.
- Experience providing direct field support to employees, supervisors, and contractors.
- Working knowledge of MSHA requirements and their practical application in surface mining and processing operations.
- Experience with inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, training, and corrective‑action management.
- Familiarity with critical‑risk controls, including hazardous energy isolation, mobile equipment safety, confined spaces, fall protection, lifting operations, and chemical safety.
- Strong communication, coaching, analytical, and technical‑writing skills.
- The confidence to address unsafe conditions constructively and the ability to gain cooperation without direct supervisory authority.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic safety reporting systems.
- A valid driver's license.
Experience That Will Set You Apart
- Seven to ten years of relevant safety experience, including substantial time at an operating mine.
- Experience in open‑pit copper mining, heap‑leach operations, SX/EW, or comparable mineral processing.
- CSP, ASP, CMSP, or another relevant professional credential.
- Experience supporting MSHA inspections, contractor oversight, critical‑control verification, and incident investigations.
- Mine safety training experience or relevant instructor qualifications.
- Industrial hygiene, emergency response, first aid/CPR/AED, or hazardous‑materials training.
- Experience supporting construction, commissioning, operational growth, or major maintenance projects.
