Job description

Our services include construction management, fabrication, erection, mechanical installation, and plant maintenance for heavy industrial, commercial, and roadway projects, as well as a full spectrum of golf course construction and management services.

The Field Safety Director provides strategic safety leadership and operational oversight for multiple steel erection and construction projects across assigned regions. This position is responsible for developing and implementing project-specific safety strategies, ensuring compliance with company standards, customer requirements, and regulatory obligations, and supporting the successful execution of projects from pre-bid planning through project completion.

The Field Safety Director partners closely with Operations, Project Management, Estimating, Business Development, and Customers to identify project risks, establish site-specific safety plans, manage subcontractor safety performance, and ensure safety requirements are integrated into all phases of project execution. This role serves as the primary safety leader for assigned field projects and is responsible for promoting a culture that proactively identifies hazards, manages risk, and protects employees, subcontractors, customers, and company assets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Program Development and Project Planning

• Develop, implement, and oversee project-specific safety plans for multiple steel erection and construction projects.
• Ensure safety programs align with Lexicon standards, customer requirements, contractual obligations, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Participate in project startup planning, constructability reviews, risk assessments, and mobilization activities to identify and mitigate safety risks before work begins.
• Review customer safety requirements and integrate applicable standards into project execution plans.
• Coordinate safety requirements, orientations, and compliance expectations for project teams and subcontractors.

Business Development, Bids, and Proposals

• Support estimating and business development teams during project pursuits, bids, and proposals.
• Review bid packages, customer safety specifications, and contract requirements to identify safety-related risks, costs, staffing requirements, and compliance obligations.
• Assist with the development of project-specific safety approaches and resources that support competitive and successful project proposals.
• Participate in customer presentations, pre-award meetings, and safety discussions as needed.

Site Qualification and Customer Compliance

• Conduct safety evaluations and prequalification reviews for new projects, customers, and work locations.
• Review customer prequalification requirements and coordinate submission of safety performance information and documentation.
• Ensure project-specific safety documentation, permits, plans, and procedures are developed and maintained prior to project startup.
• Build and maintain effective working relationships with customer safety representatives and project stakeholders.

Subcontractor Safety Management

• Lead subcontractor safety oversight across assigned projects.
• Participate in subcontractor prequalification, selection, onboarding, and performance evaluations.
• Ensure subcontractors comply with company policies, customer expectations, and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct audits, inspections, and performance reviews to verify compliance and drive continuous improvement.
• Partner with project leadership to address deficiencies and implement corrective actions.

Training and Education

• Develop and deliver safety training programs for project personnel, supervisors, and management.
• Ensure all employees and subcontractors receive required safety orientation and project-specific training.
• Provide coaching and leadership development to field supervision regarding hazard recognition, risk management, and incident prevention.

Site Inspections, Audits, and Performance Monitoring

• Conduct regular field visits, audits, inspections, and observations across multiple active projects.
• Identify existing and potential hazards and ensure timely corrective actions are implemented.Monitor safety performance through leading and lagging indicators and develop action plans to improve results.
• Prepare and present safety performance updates and trend analysis to operational and executive leadership.

Incident Investigation and Risk Management

• Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, injuries, property damage events, and near misses.
• Identify root causes and develop sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
• Analyze trends across projects and implement proactive strategies to reduce risk and improve performance.
• Coordinate case management activities and maintain relationships with medical providers and project stakeholders as necessary.

Regulatory Compliance

• Maintain knowledge of OSHA regulations and other applicable safety standards affecting steel erection and construction operations.
• Ensure all project safety documentation is current, complete, and compliant.
• Serve as a liaison with customers, contractors, and regulatory agencies when required.

Safety Culture and Leadership

• Promote a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement across all assigned projects.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to project teams, operational leadership, customers, and subcontractors.
• Foster open communication regarding safety concerns, lessons learned, and risk mitigation opportunities.
• Support organizational initiatives that strengthen safety performance and operational excellence.

Emergency Response and Crisis Management

• Develop and maintain project-specific emergency response plans.
• Participate in emergency preparedness activities and response coordination for assigned projects.
• Provide leadership and support during significant incidents or emergency situations.

Collaboration and Leadership

• Partner with Operations, Project Management, Estimating, Business Development, and Customer representatives to integrate safety into all phases of project execution.
• Represent the Company during customer meetings, project planning sessions, subcontractor meetings, and safety committees.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to project safety personnel and field management teams.

Physical Demands

Considerable amounts of travel, some weekend work and overtime. Requires excessive walking and ability to climb at job sites to evaluate safety compliance. Must be able to tolerate temperature fluctuations, and a dusty/noisy work environment. Must be able to work around high voltage electromagnetic fields. Ability to lift, push, pull and carry 100 pounds occasionally. All of the physical demands listed are essential functions.
