Job summary

  • Additional qualifications: Associate or technical degree; 1–4+ years in pipeline ops; HAZWOPER, forklift or fire training.
  • Experience with HMI systems and batch scheduling.

Job description

Field Operator (Associate, I, II) Position

Depending on your experience, you’ll join us as an Associate, Level I, or Level II Field Operator. At Colonial Pipeline, our Field Operators are at the heart of our mission—ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of refined petroleum products across the country.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in our NexGen Training Program to build technical skills and gain hands‑on experience.
  • Monitor pipeline systems, perform inspections, launch and receive pipeline internal tools, and conduct minor maintenance.
  • At higher levels, guide junior team members, troubleshoot operational issues, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Perform covered tasks under 49CFR195.501(b) and respond to abnormal operating conditions with confidence.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) from an accredited institution.
  • Live within a 60‑minute commute from the designated work location.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for company and personal vehicle use.
  • Willingness to work 8‑ and 12‑hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends, and to call out for occasional overtime.
  • Strong work ethic, safety‑first mindset, and commitment to the Company’s core values of Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Safety, and Excellence.
  • Ability to complete Colonial’s NexOp Program and operator qualifications.
  • At facilities with multiple operating consoles, qualified on two or more consoles.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Skill Set I, II, and III of the NexOp Program; successful completion of Skill SetIV.
  • Commitment to consistently adhere to policies and procedures and to be a positive example for others.
  • Additional qualifications (not required): Associate or technical degree in a related field, 1–4+ years of experience in pipeline operations, HAZWOPER training, forklift training/licensing, or fire training.
  • Experience with HMI systems and batch scheduling.
Physical Requirements & Work Conditions
  • Physical mobility to sit, stand, reach, pull, push, and bend.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs. unassisted.
  • Ability to work in non‑permit required confined spaces.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain to reach secluded right‑of‑way.
  • Ability to climb stairs, vertical ladders up to 10ft., and tank steps as high as 60ft. without assistance.
  • Ability to verbally communicate by two‑way radio, especially during emergency response.
  • Normal visual acuity to perform duties of the position; if vision is corrected, it must be corrected to 20/40 or better.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors—especially red, green, white, yellow, cyan, and black—for control panel indicator lights and to analyze product colors.
  • Ability to detect the presence of petroleum products by smell.
  • Considered “Heavy Work” based on ADA physical standards.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors at all hours in all weather conditions near refined petroleum products and heavy equipment.
