Job summary

The State of Indiana's INDOT LaPorte District seeks a Testing Operations Technician to collect material samples, repair and calibrate testing equipment, and perform field/office duties. The role combines field work with lab/testing responsibilities and requires a CDL (or to obtain one within 90 days). Eligible for comprehensive benefits through the State.

Location is LaPorte District Lab with a pay rate of $22.00–$24.26/hour; CDL bonuses may apply. CDL training is provided on-site.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Class A or Class B CDL or obtain one within the first 90 days of employment.
• Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local highway guidelines, laws and regulations for construction inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair.
• Knowledge of drafting and surveying techniques.
• Ability to independently lead and coordinate the work of a crew in the field.
• Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents.
• Must endure exposure to inclement weather.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods.

Responsibilities

• Comply with INDOT safety policies and procedures.
• Operate basic highway maintenance/traffic equipment.
• Ensure staff complete work as directed and report problems to supervisors.
• Communicate with contractors to ensure procedures meet INDOT standards.
• Perform winter operations including snow and ice removal.
• Perform equipment maintenance and pre-trip inspections.
• Maintain, repair and install traffic signs and markings.
• Respond to emergencies with traffic control and barricades.
• Attend work at assigned worksites as required.
• Provide technical oversight and operation for Bridge Maintenance tasks.
• Sample and test construction materials; visit plants/sites to collect samples.
• Assist in planning, design, construction, and rehabilitation of state highways and bridges.
• Maintain geotechnical lab equipment and perform soil/rock testing.
