Job summary

The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. (MSG) is seeking a Soils and Concrete Field Technician to join our Geoenvironmental Services team in Canton, Michigan.

You will perform construction materials testing and inspection for diverse projects and document compliance with project specs and standards. We value hands-on field work, collaboration with engineers and project managers, and building technical skills in a team-focused setting while adhering to safety and quality protocols.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of construction materials testing and inspection experience
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
• Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic field-reporting systems

Responsibilities

• Perform field observations, testing, and inspections of soils, aggregates, concrete, and other construction materials
• Conduct field density testing of soils and aggregates using nuclear density gauges and other approved testing methods
• Monitor concrete placement activities and perform sampling, slump, air-content, and temperature testing
• Observe and document earthwork operations, including subgrade preparation, excavation, backfilling, and compaction
• Prepare accurate, timely field reports that document test locations, elevations or lifts, weather conditions, quantities, contractor activities, observations, test results, deficiencies, and photographs
• Promptly communicate inspection findings, failing test results, and observed deviations to contractors, project managers, and engineering staff
• Verify that observed construction activities conform to project plans, specifications, and applicable industry standards
• Safely operate hand tools and testing equipment during field assignments
• Maintain testing equipment and ensure calibrations are current
• Properly label, protect, transport, and deliver samples with secure chain-of-custody
• Secure, transport, operate, and document nuclear density gauges and testing equipment as required
• Perform field testing and inspections in changing weather conditions and active construction environments
• Follow safety procedures and use stop-work authority when needed
• Use electronic systems to manage scheduling, time entry, field reporting, and photographs
• Provide field support for geotechnical and environmental projects
