Job summary

The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. (MSG) is seeking a motivated Soils and Concrete Field Technician with 1–3 years of experience to join our Geoenvironmental Services team in Canton, Michigan.

In this role, you will perform construction materials testing and inspection services for commercial, industrial, transportation, and municipal projects. You will collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to document compliance with project specifications and applicable standards while

Qualifications

  • 1 - 3 years of construction materials testing and inspection experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and testing requirements.
  • Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field observations, testing, and inspections of soils, aggregates, concrete, and other construction materials.
  • Conduct field density testing of soils and aggregates using nuclear density gauges and other approved testing methods.
  • Monitor concrete placement activities and perform sampling, slump, air-content, and temperature testing, including casting concrete test cylinders.
  • Observe and document earthwork operations, including subgrade preparation, excavation, backfilling, and compaction.
  • Prepare accurate, timely field reports documenting test locations, elevations, weather, quantities, contractor activities, observations, test results, deficiencies, and photos.
  • Communicate inspection findings and deviations to contractors and project staff while avoiding direction of the contractor’s means.
  • Verify observed construction activities conform to plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Safely operate hand tools and testing equipment in active construction environments.
  • Ensure equipment checks and calibrations are current and maintain testing equipment per procedures.
  • Label, protect, transport, and deliver samples with chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Handle nuclear density gauges and testing equipment per procedures and regulations.
  • Perform field testing in changing weather and active construction environments.
  • Adhere to safety procedures and stop-work when necessary.
  • Use electronic systems to manage scheduling, time entry, field reporting, and photographic documentation.
  • Provide field support for geotechnical and environmental projects.
