Job summary

Florida Department of Health in Fort Myers is seeking an Environmental Specialist I. The role conducts inspections across Public Swimming Pools, Food Safety & Sanitation, Biomedical Waste, and related programs to protect public health.

The incumbent performs field duties, records daily activity, and may provide expert testimony when needed. Requires ability to obtain or maintain certifications, valid driver's license, and experience with basic computer tools for health inspections.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or higher in physical/natural sciences or engineering.
• Recent certification ability to obtain Food Hygiene certification is not required here, but familiarity with public health rules is relevant.
• Ability to operate field equipment and drive a county vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections in programs such as Public Swimming Pools, Food Safety & Sanitation, and Biomedical Waste.
• Investigate nuisance complaints and initiate compliance actions as directed.
• Record Daily Activity Reports and maintain time sheets.
• Attend mandatory training and coordinate with Environmental Supervisor I.
• Present expert testimony as required in legal proceedings.
