Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking a Field Engineering Trainee for its Maintenance of Way department. Train under current supervisors to learn track inspection, maintenance and bridge work across multiple locations, including Birmingham, AL.

After six months, you will manage maintenance staff and inspections within a large territory. The program emphasizes hands-on, outdoors work, strong leadership and safety.

Qualifications

• Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree (BS)
• Preferred Majors: Civil, Mining, Construction Management, General, Mechanical, Industrial, Biosystems Engineering, Management
• In lieu of a degree: 4+ years leadership/industrial experience
• Shift work required
• On-call required
• Travel extensive and relocation possible

Responsibilities

• Oversee inspections, repair and maintenance of railroad tracks and bridges
• Lead and supervise field crews in a 24/7 operation
• Train for six months then manage track maintenance staff and inspections
• Plan, manage and adapt workloads across large territory
• Communicate clearly and safely with crews and supervisors
