Job summary

The Lane Construction Corporation, through its VSL Electrical, Signing, Lighting unit in Virginia, is seeking Field Engineers to support a major highway project. You will work in both the field and office, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to safety, scheduling, take-offs, and submittals.

The Field Engineer Development Program (FEDP) accelerates growth with structured training, mentorship, and exposure to estimating, scheduling, controls, quality, safety, and operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field required.
  • Ability to work effectively in field and office environments.

Responsibilities

  • Support project teams by ensuring work is safe, efficient, and aligned with plans.
  • Assist with project scheduling and planning activities.
  • Prepare cost and time estimates to meet budgets and deadlines.
  • Perform quantity take-offs and manage submittals.
  • Assist with surveying and layout activities.
  • Track job quantities, production rates, and project costs.
  • Identify discrepancies between designs and field conditions and propose solutions.
  • Coordinate with third-party utility providers prior to construction.

What You’ll Do

As a Field Engineer, you will support project teams by helping ensure work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans and specifications. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing both office and field responsibilities to support project requirements, including implementation of scheduled work and tracking project data.
  • Assisting with project scheduling and planning activities.
  • Preparing cost and time estimates to help meet project budgets and deadlines.
  • Performing quantity take-offs.
  • Preparing and managing submittals.
  • Assisting with surveying and layout activities.
  • Tracking job quantities, production rates, and project costs.
  • Identifying discrepancies between design plans and field conditions and communicating solutions.
  • Coordinating with third-party utility providers to ensure utilities are properly identified and located before construction activities begin.
  • Supporting project teams with additional duties as assigned.
