Job summary

Opti Staffing is seeking a Field Engineer in Portland, OR, offering a salary range of $110,000–$130,000 per year plus commission. This full-time position is on-site with field-based responsibilities including customer visits and engineering support.

The ideal candidate has a mechanical engineering background with AutoCAD experience and 3–7+ years in industrial settings. Travel to customer facilities will be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• 3–7+ years of engineering or technical experience in an industrial environment.
• AutoCAD experience required; ability to create, modify, and interpret technical drawings.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and analytical problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and confidence working directly with customers.
• Willingness to travel to customer facilities, including overnight trips.
• Ability to read P&IDs, BOMs, and develop practical engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Visit customer facilities to assess equipment, processes, and existing systems to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Partner with Sales Representatives and fellow Field Engineers to develop customized technical solutions.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, fluid, and industrial systems and recommend improvements to performance and reliability.
• Create and modify engineering drawings using AutoCAD.
• Prepare technical proposals, BOMs, and P&IDs.
• Translate technical findings into clear, practical recommendations for customers.
• Provide technical support during equipment inspections, installations, testing, and commissioning.
• Assist customers and internal teams with technical questions and troubleshooting.
• Document site visits, engineering recommendations, and project activity.
• Stay current on industry practices, equipment, and safety standards.

They're looking to add a Field Engineer to their collaborative team who enjoys hands‑on problem‑solving, working directly with customers, and developing practical solutions to complex industrial challenges.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

• Visit customer facilities to assess equipment, processes, and existing systems to identify opportunities for improvement.

WHAT YOU NEED:

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• 3–7+ years of engineering or technical experience in an industrial environment.
• Background in semiconductor, oil and gas, paper, manufacturing, or general industrial applications.
• AutoCAD experience required, including the ability to create, modify, and interpret technical drawings.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, analytical thinking, and technical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to evaluate equipment and systems and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence working directly with customers.
• Ability to collaborate with sales teams and explain technical concepts to various audiences.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Willingness to learn new equipment, processes, and industrial applications.

PREFERRED:

• Experience with fluid systems, fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, or industrial equipment.
• Familiarity with P&IDs, BOMs, and technical proposal development.
• Experience with 3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks.
• Exposure to equipment installation, testing, commissioning, or field engineering support.
• Previous experience working in a customer‑facing engineering or technical sales environment.

THE MUSTS:

• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to travel to customer facilities, including occasional overnight trips.
• Willingness to use a personal vehicle for business travel during the first 90 days, with eligible mileage reimbursed.
• Comfortable working in manufacturing facilities, industrial environments, and customer job sites.
• Ability to follow applicable safety procedures and wear required PPE.Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
