Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a Project Inspector/Construction Inspector to oversee highway construction and maintenance projects under supervision. You will ensure work aligns with plans, specifications, and safety requirements while maintaining thorough project documentation.

The role requires strong communication skills, ability to read complex roadway/bridge plans, and proficiency with project management tools.

Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public.
Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.
Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents.
Knowledge of construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

Responsibilities

Communicate with VDOT support staff and external support staff; assist in managing public relations for project; notify traffic changes and project phase timings.
Ensure construction activities comply with contract, plans, environmental controls, safety, traffic controls, and EEO/DBE guidelines; document non-compliance and resolutions.
Maintain materials documentation, daily diaries, and correlate with contractor schedules; maintain project files and as-built drawings.
Monitor and document QC tasks for contract compliance; assist with project schedules and resource management; may act as Project Inspector for less complex contracts.
