Job summary

Ashevillenc seeks a Peer Support Specialist to work with the Asheville Fire Department-REST team to assist individuals who are unsheltered or need behavioral health support. You will connect people to housing resources and wrap-around services through a trauma-informed, person-centered approach.

Responsibilities include outreach in parks and encampments, education on harm reduction, data entry with ArcGIS Survey 123, and crisis de-escalation.

Qualifications

• Must have lived experience with a diagnosable mental health disorder, substance use disorder, and/or homelessness.
• Knowledge of Buncombe County social service resources.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed, cultural, and person-centered care.
• Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing Methods.
• Knowledge of basic case management methods.
• Knowledge of computer applications.

Responsibilities

• Outreach to encampments, non-traditional settings and community spaces to build relationships and provide proactive, direct support.
• Link individuals to wrap-around community support services and assist in housing pathways.
• Educate individuals on harm reduction and connect to relevant resources.
• Educate community members and businesses on supporting unsheltered individuals.
• Collaborate with community social service agencies and downtown businesses.
• Transport individuals when needed within the scope of work.
• Advocate for individuals with confidentiality and culturally supportive care.
• Data entry using ArcGIS Survey 123 and document interactions in case files.
• Crisis prevention and de-escalation; maintain professional boundaries.
• Perform other related duties as required.
