Job summary

Bay Area Community Services (BACS) is seeking a Peer Counselor for the Alameda County region to provide field-based direct services and self-help peer support to individuals and families pursuing recovery.

The role draws on lived experience to guide wellness plans, with responsibilities including outreach, scheduling, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to ensure engaging, barrier-free services in the community.

Qualifications

• Peer certification preferred or enrollment in CalMHSA Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist or equivalent.
• Peer support experience required.
• Lived experiences include homelessness, mental health treatment, SUD treatment, criminal justice involvement, and/or family member involvement with their support.
• High school diploma required.
• Use of a computer/documentation platform to document work is required.
• Bilingual in threshold language preferred.
• Experience navigating the social services system personally preferred.
• Experience working in diverse community settings.

Responsibilities

• Provides field-based direct services and peer support to participants and families.
• Maintains a defined caseload and manages extensive local travel.
• Documents services in progress notes and billable records.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary team for care coordination.
• Delivers crisis support and links to long-term resources.
• Mentors participants and supports recovery plans in the community.
