Job description

Fiber Optic Technician – Immediate need

The Fiber Optic Technician will install, maintain, and repair fiber optic networks, ensuring efficient and reliable data transmission. This role involves splicing fiber cables, setting up networking equipment, troubleshooting issues, and performing regular maintenance to support the overall integrity and performance of the fiber optic infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Fiber Optic Installation:
    1. Install and configure fiber optic cables, hardware, and networking equipment.
    2. Route and lay fiber optic cables in commercial, industrial, and residential environments.
    3. Perform fiber optic splicing and termination for a variety of network setups.
  2. Testing and Troubleshooting:
    1. Use specialized tools (e.g., OTDR, fiber optic testers) to test fiber optic lines for signal strength, quality, and performance.
    2. Diagnose and resolve issues with fiber optic cables, connections, and equipment.
    3. Conduct troubleshooting and repair of fiber optic systems, including issues with transmission loss, broken cables, or damaged connectors.
  3. Maintenance and Upgrades:
    1. Perform regular maintenance and inspections on fiber optic networks to ensure peak performance.
    2. Troubleshoot network connectivity problems and implement solutions to maintain network uptime.
    3. Upgrade and replace outdated fiber optic systems and hardware as needed.
  4. Documentation:
    1. Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and network configurations.
    2. Document any issues, fixes, and ongoing maintenance needs.
  5. Customer Support:
    1. Provide support to clients or end-users when fiber optic-related issues arise.
    2. Offer technical advice and ensure timely resolution of customer complaints or inquiries.
Skills & Qualifications:
  1. Proficiency with fiber optic tools and testing equipment (e.g., OTDR, fusion splicer).
  2. Ability to splice and terminate fiber optic cables with precision.
  3. Familiarity with networking protocols, routers, switches, and basic network configurations.
  4. Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and solving technical issues related to fiber optic systems.
  5. Ability to work safely with fiber optic materials and tools, understanding the potential hazards (e.g., glass shards, electrical risks).
  6. Capable of handling the physical demands of the job, such as working in confined spaces, climbing ladders, and lifting heavy equipment.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with customers and team members.
Education & Experience:
  1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, or related field preferred.
  2. Experience: Prior experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, or related field is preferred.
  3. Certifications: Certification as a Fiber Optic Technician (e.g., CFOT - Certified Fiber Optic Technician) may be required or preferred.
Work Environment:
  1. This role may require working in various environments, including outdoor, remote, or industrial settings.
  2. Work can involve long hours, occasional overtime, and on-call shifts for emergency repairs.
Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.
  2. Ability to work in high places or confined spaces.
  3. Manual dexterity to handle fine tools and equipment.
