State of North Carolina's Department of Transportation is seeking a Ferry Master (S) to operate U.S. Coast Guard inspected vessels across North Carolina's coastal, sound, and river waterways.

You will supervise deck, engine room, and crew, ensuring safe operation and compliance with safety and Homeland Security rules. The role requires a valid USCG Master license for Inspected Ferry Vessels, Radar Observer, FCC Marine Radio Operator permit, and TWIC.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid U.S. Coast Guard license as Master of Inspected Ferry Vessels.
  • Possession of a valid Radar Observer certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Marine Radio Operator permit (FCC).
  • Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Knowledge of safety rules and Homeland Security regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Navigates vessels on pre-charted courses between dock terminals and adheres to navigational regulations.
  • Directs crews in operational and maintenance functions and coordinates repairs with the marine engineer.
  • Assists the department and U.S. Coast Guard in safety inspections and addresses any inadequacies.
  • Conducts safety meetings and emergency drills for crew and passengers.
  • Monitors docking and handling of vehicles, passengers, and cargo; oversees loading/unloading.
  • Trains and supervises lower-level crew members.
  • Performs related duties as required.
