Job description

Job Opportunity with NCDOT

This position offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries, and numerous career development opportunities.

Individuals in this role perform responsible work aboard U.S. Coast Guard certified vessels. Work assessment is supervised by the Able-Bodied Seaman and Ferry Master, focusing on safety related to the boarding, loading, and unloading of passengers and vehicles. Additional duties include maintaining deck and electrical/mechanical equipment, passenger facilities, and enforcing safety and security regulations per U.S. Coast Guard standards. Employees may also perform shore duties and other assigned tasks.

This position is based at the Southport Ferry Operations and involves shift work—7 days on, 7 days off.

Applicants must present a valid TWIC card, USCG Merchant Mariners Credential, and a current medical card at the interview.

Applicants should submit an application that clearly details relevant work experience demonstrating:

  • Knowledge of basic seamanship, including marlinspike, helm commands, and shipboard terminology.
  • Understanding of firefighting principles, fire classes, and extinguishing techniques, including proper fire hose handling.
  • Experience with launching and operating rescue boats and recovering unconscious persons from water.
  • Knowledge of personal survival techniques and safety/social responsibility.
  • Practical ability to remove a 50 lbs fire extinguisher, carry it to a fire, and properly discharge it.

Required qualifications include possession of a valid Ordinary Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by TSA.
