Job Opportunity with NCDOT

This position offers State Benefits, competitive salaries, and numerous career development opportunities.

Individuals in this role perform responsible work on board U.S. Coast Guard certified vessels. Work assessment is based on safety and duties related to the operation, loading, and unloading of passengers and vehicles. Responsibilities include maintaining deck and electrical/mechanical equipment, passenger facilities, and enforcing safety and security regulations per U.S. Coast Guard standards. Shore duties and other tasks may also be assigned.

Positions available: 60018613, 60018568, and 60089122. You need only to apply once to be considered for all.

Work location: Hatteras Ferry Operations.

This position involves shift work—7 days on, 7 days off.

Dormitory housing may be available during shifts.

A copy of both TWIC and a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential, including a current medical card, must be presented at the interview.

Applicants should submit an application demonstrating the following experience:

  • Knowledge of basic seamanship, including marlinspike, helm commands, and shipboard terms.
  • Understanding of firefighting principles, fire classes, and hose handling techniques.
  • Experience with launching and operating rescue boats and recovering unconscious persons from water.
  • Knowledge of personal survival techniques and safety/social responsibility.
  • Practical ability to remove a 50 lbs fire extinguisher from its bracket, carry it to a fire, and properly discharge it.

Note: Some state postings allow qualification via an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” Refer to oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.

Required credentials include a valid Ordinary Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
