East Texas A&M University Campus Recreation is seeking a Group Fitness Instructor (Federal Work Study or Student Worker) to lead group fitness classes and support wellness education for students in Commerce, Texas.

You will instruct classes, emphasize safe form, provide modifications for all fitness levels, assist with check-ins, and participate in onboarding and mentorship programs while gaining hands-on experience in fitness services on campus.

Qualifications

  • Must possess or obtain before teaching a nationally recognized group fitness instructor certification or specialty group fitness certification (ACE, NCCA, Zumba, Yoga, NETA, SCW or other Specialization)
  • Condition of employment - must obtain certification by a certain date and must maintain current Group Fitness Certification
  • Ability to move 50lbs or more as required by job duties

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and lead group fitness classes in a safe, welcoming, motivating and engaging environment
  • Educate and reinforce proper exercise form and technique for participants
  • Promote knowledge of proper group fitness concepts, i.e.: warm up, aerobic exercise, flexibility, cool down, etc.
  • Offer a variety of exercise modifications to accommodate all fitness levels
  • Monitor and assist participants with check in of group fitness classes
  • Participate in Continuing Education Credits (CEC's or CEU's)
  • Provide excellent customer service to all participants
  • Attend the in house onboarding classes, shadow shifts, and mentorship program
  • Instruct multiple formats or multiple specialty group fitness certifications
  • Perform other duties assigned

Summary of Responsibilities: The Group Fitness Instructor position is for students interested in gaining knowledge in fitness and wellness through group classes and instruction. This is a great position for group fitness instructors to gather hands‑on experience by providing participants with guidance in physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, students will engage, educate and empower members on additional fitness and well‑being topics during classes, workshops and events.

Department Responsibilities: Provide exceptional customer service by welcoming and assisting Campus Recreation participants, answering questions accurately and professionally, addressing concerns in a courteous manner, and creating a positive, engaging environment for all patrons and participants, Market Campus Recreation and area events, Demonstrate a commitment to providing an environment where people feel welcomed, valued, supported, and respected as they work to pursue their academic and professional goals, Act as a first responder in emergency situations, Attend all department and area trainings and meetings as assigned, Must possess a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED and First Aid certification provided by the department at no cost, Keep up to date on all TrainTraq assignments, Be prepared to encounter and respond to various hazards, with training provided to ensure safety and proper handling of potential risks, Maintain a standard of conduct while participating in Campus Rec activities or facilities, serving as a role model for other patrons by adhering to all safety, behavior, and policies, Assists with department events and programming as needed, Work early morning, night and weekend hours as needed

Desired Qualifications: Prior participation in a group fitness classes, Certifications - Obtaining additional fitness certifications will result in a higher hourly pay rate due to the nature of training and knowledge, Two certifications - $14.00, Three or more certifications - $14.50, All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.

May work up to 19 hours per week while classes are in session, May work full‑time during breaks and summer if enrolled for the upcoming fall. Must not work during scheduled class times. Open to all actively enrolled students regardless of financial aid status. Students do not need to be enrolled during summer if they plan to return in the fall. Work‑study positions are need‑based jobs funded through federal or state financial aid programs and allow students to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. Must be awarded federal or state work‑study through Financial Aid. May work up to 19 hours per week during the semester, May work full‑time during breaks and summer if returning in the fall. Must not work during scheduled class times. Positions are limited to the amount awarded and must follow program guidelines. Graduate assistantships offer opportunities to teach, conduct research, or assist in academic departments while continuing your graduate education. To qualify, students must: Be fully admitted to a graduate program (not provisional or non‑degree), Be in good standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA, Be enrolled in courses each term of the assistantship, Meet specific credit hour and subject requirements for teaching or lab roles, Non‑native English speakers must demonstrate language proficiency, Research assistants must complete Responsible Conduct in Research training, Work up to 20 hours per week, depending on the appointment, May have teaching or research assignments, or provide administrative support.
