Job summary

The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice seeks a Staff Attorney to join the Federal Litigation team within its Immigration Law Unit. The Staff Attorney will represent low-income clients before the U.S.

District Courts and Courts of Appeals to safeguard immigrants’ rights and ensure fair interpretation of immigration laws. The ILU is a leader in providing immigration services across New York City and surrounding counties.

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York State Bar and eligibility to seek admission to the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second and Third Circuits and the Southern District of New York

Responsibilities

• Develop and conduct litigation before federal district courts and Courts of Appeals (Second and Third Circuits) including habeas petitions, petitions for review, and APA actions
• Assist with class actions and other affirmative litigation for non-citizen New Yorkers
• Provide consultation to staff attorneys
• Participate in trainings to grow ILU staff knowledge on federal litigation
• Collaborate with pro bono counsel
• Create resource materials and trainings on federal court issues
• Maintain case files and the case management database
• Other duties as assigned
