Summary:
The Unconventional is seeking a highly skilled Language Instructor to join our team to support the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). The DLIFLC provides culturally based foreign language education, training, evaluation, and sustainment to enhance the security of the nation here and abroad. In this role, you will be responsible for providing classroom language instruction for the Defense Language Institute - Washington (DLI-W).
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Provide professional foreign language instruction to students in a classroom and/or virtual environment. Instruction can last six (6) hours or more per day, with courses ranging from ten (10) weeks or longer.
- Prepare for each class tailored to individual student’s needs.
- Base instruction on proficiency-oriented principles of second language acquisition with a focus on effective methods for adult learners.
- Employ authentic materials and real-world tasks that resemble what students may do with their language skills in their final job assignments.
- Ensure lessons generate spontaneous use of the language to advance students’ proficiency in all modalities.
- Teach writing skills to promote language acquisition and proficiency.
- Utilize methods like Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) for practical applications.
- Devote attention to non-participatory listening and reading comprehension to achieve end-of-course proficiency objectives.
- Prepare students for tasks in the target language, including reading handwriting, keyboarding, and writing for professional purposes.
- Engage students’ higher order thinking skills and develop independent learning skills.
- Incorporate diverse instructional technologies such as electronic flash cards, online learning applications, and virtual tools.
- Integrate intercultural competence and cultural knowledge into all phases of training.
- Use authentic materials and immersive methods guided by principles such as learner-centered approaches and task-based instruction.
- Ensure curriculum includes sufficient analysis and comprehension of listening and reading Target Language (TL) texts, integration of productive TL skills, and reinforcement of vocabulary.
- Include a syllabus in all courses regardless of length.
Required Qualifications:
- At a minimum, possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and have at least two (2) years of successful relevant experience in intensive training, teaching adults using proficiency-oriented methods aimed at ILR skill levels 2 and 3.
- At least four (4) years of relevant experience in teaching the target language to adult learners in an intensive environment may substitute for education.
- Must be an educated native speaker of the current standard form of the language/dialect taught and have strong English language skills.
- Ability to adapt to students with varying learning styles requiring different teaching strategies.
- Instructors must have Oral Proficiency Interview scores of Level 3 or above in the Target Language and Level 2 or above in English on the ILR scale.
