Job summary

City of La Porte is seeking an Apprentice level Facilities Maintenance worker to perform a variety of maintenance tasks in municipal buildings and grounds. This role requires close direction by the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor and involves basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and use of hand and power tools.

Responsibilities include assisting with HVAC operation, door and fixture repairs, plumbing services, tiling, roofing and general maintenance tasks as needed.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in construction and building maintenance.
• High School Diploma or GED.

• Make repairs on doors, windows, floors, lockers, gates, roofs, and ceilings.
• Assist in performing plumbing repairs on valves, pipes, drains, sinks, toilets, faucets, and related equipment.
• Operate various power and hand tools. May operate a variety of welding, soldering, and cutting equipment as assigned.

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of municipal buildings or facilities and grounds; and to perform minor maintenance on equipment. This position requires close direction by the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

DISTINGUISHING CHARECTERISTICS

This is the Apprentice level class in the Facilities Maintenance series. Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from lower level classes in the series by responsibility for providing technical assistance. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform basic maintenance tasks with minimum supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Facilities Manager may give direction in the absence of Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform and assist in building maintenance tasks involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical work.
• Assist in performing the operation, adjustment, and minor repairs of air conditioning and heating units and components.
• Repair and replace electrical fixtures, switches, and related equipment, using a variety of materials, tools, supplies, and equipment.
• Make repairs on doors, windows, floors, lockers, gates, roofs, and ceilings.
• Assist in performing plumbing repairs on valves, pipes, drains, sinks, toilets, faucets, and related equipment.
• Perform tiling, roofing, and fencing tasks as required.
• Repair cabinets, countertops, and other equipment requiring cabinet-making and carpentry tasks.
• Operate various power and hand tools. May operate a variety of welding, soldering, and cutting equipment as assigned.
• Perform repairs on locks and duplicate keys for various lock sets.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fumes, odors, dust/mites, electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat, heights temperature swings and constant noise; walking; twisting body; working in trenches; stooping; standing; squatting; sorting; sitting; seeing; running; kneeling; grasping; crawling; climbing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; climbing stairs; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person, by two-way radio, and by telephone; fine finger manipulation; operation of tractor, mechanical lift, power tools, and hand tools; operating a motor vehicle and bus through city traffic.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical maintenance and repair.
• Paint and drywall repair.
• Uses and operations of a variety of hand and power tools.
• Construction and maintenance methods and equipment.
• Trouble shooting electrical and mechanical systems.

Ability to:

• Perform semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.
• Operate and maintain a variety of maintenance tools and equipment.
• Perform heavy manual labor. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

One year of experience in construction and building maintenance work, and a High School Diploma or GED.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid Texas Class C Driver License
