Job summary

City of Humble is hiring a Building Maintenance Technician I in Humble, TX. The role performs routine maintenance, repair, and alteration of City buildings, fixtures, and Equipment including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, painting, and mechanical work.

The position requires basic hand tools knowledge, safe operation of drills and power tools, and a valid Texas driver’s license. Starting hourly range is $21.47–$23.83 with full range $21.47–$28.91; anticipated start date on or after

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Six (6) months of experience in facilities maintenance or related field.
  • Must pass background investigation including CJIS, physical, and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Regular and timely attendance at work.
  • Operates City vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Maintains and repairs City facilities and buildings with carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and mechanical tasks.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment for maintenance tasks.
  • Inspects facilities to identify maintenance needs and performs repairs as required.
  • Moves furniture and assembles prefabricated furniture.
  • Follows safety rules and regulations and works collaboratively.

JOB TITLE: Building Maintenance Tech I

FLSA STATUS: Non Exempt

JOB CLASS: Full Time

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager

LOCATION: 102 Granberry

WORK HOURS: 7:00AM - 4:00PM (OT as required)

ESSENTIAL*: No

STARTING HOURLY RANGE:$21.47 - $23.83

FULL HOURLY RANGE:$21.47 - $28.91

ANTICIPATED START DATE:On or after October 1, 2026

Position Summary:Under general supervision, Building Maintenance Technician I performs routine maintenance, repair, and alteration of City buildings, facilities, and fixtures. Work includes carpentry, plumbing, heating/air conditioning, electrical, painting and mechanical repair tasks within City limits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Regular and timely attendance at work
  • Operates City vehicles and other equipment as needed
  • Maintains and repairs City facilities, equipment, and buildings by performing a variety of carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and mechanical repair work
  • Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as power saws, power sanders, drills, air compressors, paint sprayers, sewer augers, and various hand tools required for maintenance tasks
  • Inspects facilities to identify building maintenance needs; performs repair and maintenance of wood structures
  • Moves furniture and equipment; assembles prefabricated furniture
  • Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety rules and regulations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic hand tools
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely operate drills, buffers, grinders, power saws, and other power tools
  • Knowledge of applying paints, chemicals, lubricants, and other materials used in maintenance work
  • Knowledge of basic safety practices to be observed in building maintenance activities
  • Ability to perform basic building maintenance, construction, and repair duties
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment and in extreme situations
  • Ability to follow instructions, safety practices, and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly
  • Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Six (6) months of experience in a facilities maintenance or related field
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation Including (CJIS background), physical, and drug screen

Essential Position:

  • This is a position that is not essential to the provision of emergency services during and/or following a disaster.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: Must be able to exercise good judgment; make competent decisions; handle multiple projects; meet deadlines; and work well under time constraints, pressure, and stress. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation, including the ability to talk, read, see, walk, and hear; operate tools and maintenance equipment; follow oral and written directives; perform strenuous physical tasks to include exerting up to 50 lbs of force, lifting heavy objects, shoveling, crawling, bending, kneeling, and climbing on and off equipment. Must have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate equipment; able to lift up to 50 lbs several times a day; work indoors and outdoors, in confined spaces, on ladders, and under noisy conditions; work in adverse environmental conditions including rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure, dust/mist, and hazardous conditions such as street traffic; and be exposed to paints and chemicals. Must maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
