Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance on Housing and Residence Life facilities, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and painting tasks.
  • Repair electrical components and systems, including outlets, lighting, motors, and panels.
  • Assist in testing and replacing emergency equipment and servicing appliances.
  • Maintain safety and housekeeping standards while performing tasks.

Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU ) is seeking a skilled and motivated Electrician to join the Facilities Maintenance team for the Department of Housing & Residence Life.

The Electrician is a critical role which will support the maintenance and repair of electrical systems within our student housing facilities, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for our students and staff. If you have a passion for facility maintenance and mechanical systems, we encourage you to apply! Employees must work ‘on call’ during the appointed dates and times when requested. This also includes callback work if needed.

Responsibilities of the Electrician include:

  • Performing inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing secondary electrical systems and related equipment
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting electrical components such as conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, switchgear, magnetic starters, disconnects, and motors
  • Troubleshoot and repair control systems, including temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators
  • Completing scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears.
  • Conducting electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical systems to avoid downtime and improve system longevity.
  • Repairing and maintaining lighting systems, including fixtures, ballasts, switches, and receptacles
  • Work with the Facilities Management team to address maintenance needs and contribute to a collaborative environment focused on improving the student living experience.
  • Respond to service requests promptly, completing work orders and ensuring all maintenance issues are resolved effectively
  • Maintaining records of repairs and maintenance performed
  • Managing work orders in Team Dynamix
  • Adhere to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations while performing tasks, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the general public.
  • Support Plumbing and HVAC repair and maintenance as part of the Facilities Maintenance team to ensure proper function across student housing facilities.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical issues effectively.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in mechanical maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in facility maintenance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and contractors.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
