The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the world’s first center dedicated to trauma, treats more than 7,500 critically injured patients a year with an incredible 97 percent survival rate. We also have one of the nation’s largest kidney and pancreas transplant programs at The Joseph and Corinne Schwartz Division of Transplantation, home to Maryland’s first steroid-free protocol and pancreas/kidney transplant. From our National Cancer Institute-designated UM Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center to The University of Maryland’s Children’s Hospital, one of the largest pediatric centers in the state, we are dedicated to saving and transforming lives.

Working hours are 8am - 12pm, with some Saturdays.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals in this role. They are not exhaustive of all duties.

  1. Serve as the first point of contact for patients and visitors, ensuring excellent customer service in Patient Access/Patient Administrative Services, recognizing patient anxiety and providing support.
  2. Focus on interpersonal skills, data collection, situation assessment, and team collaboration to achieve customer service excellence and hospital financial health.
  3. Collect and verify patient and insurance demographics, review benefits in Epic, provide cost estimates, secure pre-certifications, and collect co-pays and deposits, while offering financial assistance as needed.
  4. Assist patients with wayfinding to clinics and appointments, maintaining knowledge of clinic locations for efficient navigation.
  5. Ensure compliance with registration requirements for accurate reporting and billing, obtaining signatures and performing clerical duties as needed.
  6. Educate patients about insurance coverage and billing procedures, and communicate coverage issues to relevant staff for resolution.
  7. Verify paperwork accuracy, contact clinical staff for incomplete registration documents, and distribute admission materials if necessary.
  8. Maintain scheduling templates for outpatient providers, ensuring optimal utilization.
  9. Coordinate with Care Management and Social Work to gather information for reimbursement and ensure pre-admission requirements are met.
  10. Assist in training new staff by demonstrating department processes and procedures.

Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Memberships in organizations like AAHAM, NAHAM preferred.
  • At least 1 year of clerical, customer service, or receptionist experience, preferably in healthcare; 2 years preferred.
