Job summary

MWRA in Chelsea, MA is seeking a skilled craftsman to perform shop or field carpentry and masonry, fabricating and repairing wood or masonry structures and applying finishes.

You will read blueprints, select materials, maintain cabinets and locks, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure safety procedures. The role requires a high school diploma, journeyman experience or masonry/painting knowledge, and a valid MA driver's license.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or GED; and
• Experience as a journeyman carpenter or completion of an apprenticeship in the carpentry trade or thorough knowledge of the practices of masonry trade or thorough knowledge of the proper techniques of commercial painting; and
• Satisfactory completion of competency-based training program in accordance with the productivity improvement plan training program established at MWRA; and
• Considerable knowledge of methods of preparing wood, metal, glass, plaster, cement, and other materials and surfaces for painting, as well as the tools, methods and standard practices used in the painting trade; or
• Any equivalent combination of education or experience.
• A valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicles Operators License.
• This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather or other emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Plans, lays out work, selects materials and tools per work order.
• Fabricates structures and assembles using woodworking or masonry tools; installs locks.
• Performs preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on cabinets, locks, wood structures, concrete or masonry objects and equipment.
• Works from blueprints and requires precision measuring and equipment operation.
• Prepares surfaces for painting and finishes; applies paint, stain, varnish and wallpaper.
• Operates ladders, lifts and forklifts as needed; conducts safety checks and reporting.
