Job summary

Peabody Essex Museum is seeking a full-time Maintenance Carpenter to maintain, repair, and alter historic structures. You will perform skilled carpentry using hand and power tools, read blueprints, and ensure safety standards across facilities.

You will work both independently and with the Facilities team, including off-hour responses and weekend shifts as needed. OSHA 10 is required; CSL is desirable. A valid MA driver’s license is needed for fleet operation.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or equivalent; vocational training in carpentry preferred.
  • OSHA 10 Certification is required.
  • Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to pass MassDOT physical.
  • CSL license is highly desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled carpentry to maintain, repair, and alter museum buildings and historic structures.
  • Build, renovate, and repair doors, hardware, windows, roofs, floors, and stairs.
  • Read sketches, blueprints, and layouts to execute work accurately.
  • Inspect facilities and assess carpentry repairs or alterations.
  • Estimate job duration and material/labor needs; participate in site visits with vendors.

Job description

Reporting to the Facilities Operations Supervisor, this full-time position is responsible for performing skilled carpentry work to maintain, repair, and alter museum buildings and related historic structures. The Maintenance Carpenter applies professional carpentry techniques and uses a variety of tools to ensure the integrity, safety, and aesthetic standards of the museum's facilities. This role involves both independent maintenance tasks and collaborative project work within the Facilities department.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Structural Maintenance & Repair: Build, renovate, and repair various structural elements including doors and hardware, windows, roofs, floors, and stairs. This includes specialized tasks like framing, studding, and sheetrock finishing.
  • Facility Inspections: Regularly inspect buildings to identify necessary carpentry repairs or alterations, reporting findings to management.
  • Estimation & Planning: Estimate job duration and the cost or quantities of labor and materials required for specific projects. Assist as required with site visits involving vendors and outsourced work.
  • Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret sketches, patterns, blueprints, and layouts to execute work accurately.
  • Safety & Staging: Erect and dismantle staging and scaffolding as required for various maintenance projects.
  • General Support: Assist skilled tradespeople with the dismantling, fabrication, alteration, and construction of building structures and systems using hand and electrical power tools.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to off-hour maintenance emergencies and work varied shifts including weekends or holidays when necessary.
  • -High school diploma or equivalent vocational school diploma preferred.
  • -A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade or vocational school with a major in carpentry or woodworking may substitute for a portion of the required experience.
  • -OSHA 10 Certification is required.
  • -Construction Supervisor License (CSL) is highly desired but not required.
  • -Valid Massachusetts driver's license with excellent driving record and the ability to pass a MassDOT physical to operate museum fleet vehicles.
EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES
  • -2 to 5 years of full-time, professional experience in both rough and finish carpentry, including specialized woodworking and structural framing.
  • -Demonstrated experience in light commercial or large-scale residential build projects.
  • -Proficiency in using hand tools, measurement devices (calipers, levels, steel squares), and power tools (saws, drills, power hammers).
  • -Must possess the ability and willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • -Comprehensive knowledge of building structures, carpentry safety practices, and wood characteristics.
  • -Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions and maintain harmonious working relationships.
  • -Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite is required.
  • -Experience with preservation carpentry is highly desired but not required.
  • -Familiarity with computer-based work order systems is preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • -Ability to stand for prolonged periods and maintain physical stamina for demanding tasks.
  • -Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
  • -Comfort working from ladders, vertical and scissor lifts, scaffolding, and rigging at heights exceeding 10 feet is required.
