Job summary

The City of New Smyrna Beach seeks a Facilities Technician I to perform skilled carpentry at journeyman level. The role covers repairs and maintenance of doors, floors, windows, roofs, and fixtures, with welding, painting, and restoration tasks as needed to keep City facilities in good condition.

Responsibilities include light electrical, HVAC, and plumbing tasks, cabinet fabrication, and operating bucket trucks for elevated work areas. Valid Florida driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or equivalent plus apprenticeship training in carpentry/plumbing/electrical systems.
• Three (3) years of experience as journeyman carpenter or equivalent.
• Valid Florida Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Repairs and maintains doors, floors, restrooms, windows, partitions, roofs, and other building components.
• Performs rough/finish carpentry on wooden structures and fixtures.
• Operates power tools to fabricate and install cabinets, counters, furniture, and fixtures.
• Performs painting, finishing, and restoration tasks to maintain City facilities.
• Performs light electrical work (switches, fixtures, outlets) and basic HVAC and plumbing tasks.
• Operates City vehicles and equipment, including bucket trucks for elevated work areas.

The Public Works Department - Facilities Division is accepting applications for a full-time Facilities Technician I position. | Salary: $20.3597 per hour | 124 Industrial Park Ave, NSB FL 32168

About The Job

The Facilities Tech I Performs skilled carpentry work, at the journeyman level, involving both rough and finished carpentry.

• Repairs and maintains doors, floors, restrooms, windows, partitions, roofs, and small structural components of buildings and docks.


• Performs general rough and finish carpentry construction, alteration, and maintenance work on wooden structures, buildings, scaffolding, forms, fences, signs, furniture, and other fixtures, including barricades; performs sheeting and rough carpentry on sheds and other structures.


• Operates power saws and other standard carpentry and cabinet-making tools to fabricate, install, and repair cabinets, counters, bookcases, desks, bulletin boards, moldings, tables, chairs, benches, and other wooden articles.


• Performs hand and bench work in the carpenter shop and operates planers, jointers, and other woodworking machinery.


• Ensures timely completion of assigned work orders in accordance with established schedules, safety requirements, and quality standards.


• Maintains, repairs, and properly uses carpentry tools, equipment, and related machinery.


• Performs various painting, finishing, and restoration tasks as needed to preserve and maintain City facilities and structures.


• Performs light electrical work, including replacement and repair of switches, light fixtures, and outlets.


• Performs light HVAC-related tasks and equipment support, including basic diagnostics and routine filter maintenance for air conditioning units, ice machines, and drinking fountains.


• Performs plumbing maintenance and repair tasks in support of facility operations, consistent with Trades Worker I and II functional expectations.


• Replaces and maintains street markings for pedestrian crossings and intersection stop bars; paints street curbs as required.


• Operates City vehicles and equipment, including driving and using a bucket truck to access elevated work areas such as streetlights and flagpoles.


• Performs other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by additional apprenticeship training in carpentry, plumbing, and/or electrical systems; three (3) years of experience as journeyman carpenter; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
