Job summary

The Carey School in San Mateo, CA, is seeking a Facilities Supervisor to oversee all aspects of the physical plant for 12 months. You will supervise buildings and grounds, utilities, energy management, safety and security systems, and the work of custodial and contracted staff.

This role requires coordinating maintenance, managing the work-order system, and ensuring operations align with budget and strategic goals.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and supervise preventative maintenance programs for buildings, grounds, and safety systems.
  • Oversee safety, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related services.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair with staff and external contractors.
  • Manage the work-order system for two campuses and ensure timely completion.
  • Order equipment and monitor inventory.
  • Communicate with custodial staff regarding campus needs.
  • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous waste per regulations.
  • Set up, take down, and store furniture for events.
  • Assist the Tech Department with A/V installations.

Job description

Located in San Mateo, The Carey School is a leading independent school for Pre‑K through fifth‑grade students. General Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: The Facilities Supervisor supervises physical plant operations, including all buildings and grounds, utilities, energy management systems, and safety/security systems to provide a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment for students, faculty, and staff. The individual in this position assists in the scheduling and supervision of maintenance and repair activities, contracted services, and custodial services, and helps ensure the physical operation of the school meets budgetary and strategic objectives. This is a 12‑month position.

Primary Duties
  • In coordination with the Director of Facilities, develops, implements, and supervises preventative maintenance and renovation programs for buildings, grounds, mechanical and electrical, utility, and safety and security systems.
  • Responsible for safety and security, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation services.
  • Continuously looks for ways to improve the school grounds and makes recommendations to the Director of Facilities.
  • Responsible for the completion of the facility's daily task list.
  • Assess, coordinate, and oversee external contractors (electricians, plumbers, excavators, roofers, painters, landscapers, etc.).
  • Orders equipment and supplies and monitors inventory.
  • Communicates with custodial crew engaged in cleaning buildings and premises regarding campus needs.
  • Ensures the proper disposal of hazardous and controlled wastes in compliance with regulations and guidelines; works directly with outside agencies such as OSHA, and local and state health departments as required.
  • Manages the work‑order ticketing system for all on‑campus issues and needs (at both campuses) and ensures tickets are completed promptly.
  • Evaluates the need for and arranges for landscaping and tree maintenance.
  • Sets up, takes down, and stores furniture for school events as needed.
  • Assembles office furniture and classroom desks.
  • Assists the Tech Department with the installation of A/V equipment.
  • Performs other related tasks as requested by the Director of Facilities or their designate.
Key Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of experience in Facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
  • Demonstrate and provide high-level customer service.
  • Strong and highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, finding creative solutions to a variety of needs.
  • Working knowledge of facility systems and furniture.
  • Ability to work in a fluid environment where assignments change rapidly and are time-sensitive.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 50lbs.
Additional Information:

Position Type: Full-Time

Hours: 40 hours per week

Pay Range $43 - $48 hourly
