Job summary

The Norwich Free Academy is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to perform skilled and general maintenance across buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure to keep campus safe and reliable. You will respond to routine and emergency maintenance needs and support campus operations, events, and severe-weather operations.

This is a full-time, 12-month position with a comprehensive benefits package including vacation, holidays, health insurance, and participation in a 401(k).

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade training preferred.
• Experience in building or facilities maintenance or related field.
• Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry and related trades.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders, manuals, safety procedures, and technical instructions.
• Ability to respond to emergencies and outside normal hours when required.

Job description

The Norwich Free Academy is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician. The Facilities Maintenance Technician performs skilled and general maintenance, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance work to support the safe and reliable operation of Norwich Free Academy’s buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure. The position performs work across multiple maintenance disciplines, responds to routine and emergency maintenance needs, and supports campus operations, school activities, snow and severe-weather operations, and other Facilities Department responsibilities as assigned.

This is a full time, 12 month position. Full benefits package, including vacation, holidays, health insurance, and participation in a 401(k). Hourly rate range: $25.95 – $26.99

++Performance Responsibilities++

1. Perform maintenance and repairs to NFA buildings, equipment, machinery, fixtures, and building systems in accordance with established procedures, manufacturer instructions, and applicable codes.
2. Inspect machinery, mechanical equipment, building systems, and related equipment for defects and perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, and repair as necessary.
3. Perform electrical maintenance and repair work, including wiring, conduit, lighting fixtures, motors, electrical equipment, and related components within the scope of assigned responsibilities and applicable licensing requirements.
4. Perform plumbing maintenance and repair work, including piping, drains, valves, gauges, pressure regulators, fixtures, heating-system components, and related equipment.
5. Perform carpentry and building repair work, including the construction, repair, or installation of doors, partitions, cabinets, counters, furniture, flooring, trim, windows, and other building components.
6. Perform masonry, plaster, tile, concrete, painting, and general building maintenance and repair work as assigned.
7. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, plumbing, and equipment malfunctions and complete or assist with appropriate repairs and replacement of components.
8. Install new and replacement equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions, applicable codes, and Facilities Department procedures.
9. Maintain Facilities Department vehicles and grounds equipment, including tractors, trucks, golf carts, sweepers, snow-removal equipment, and related machinery.
10. Maintain accurate work records and documentation in accordance with Facilities Department procedures.
11. Identify building, equipment, and maintenance concerns and recommend repairs, maintenance needs, and building improvements to the Facilities Manager.
12. Participate in snow removal, sanding, salting, de-icing, campus opening and closing, and other severe-weather or emergency operations as assigned.
13. Provide Facilities coverage for school operations, evening or weekend activities, special events, and other campus needs as assigned.
14. Follow established safety practices and properly use tools, machinery, equipment, personal protective equipment, and hazardous materials.
15. Respond to urgent maintenance needs, building system failures, equipment problems, and other Facilities Department emergencies as assigned.
16. Perform other Facilities-related duties as assigned by the Head of School, Facilities Manager, Foreman, or designee.

++Working Conditions++

1. Frequent movement throughout NFA’s buildings and grounds, including work in mechanical rooms, construction areas, elevated locations, confined spaces, and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
2. Frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and other physical activities associated with facilities maintenance work.
3. Regular use of hand tools, power tools, machinery, vehicles, ladders, snow-removal equipment, and other Facilities Department equipment.
4. Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, machinery, moving mechanical components, electrical hazards, chemicals, temperature extremes, wet or humid conditions, and other conditions associated with facilities maintenance operations.
5. Ability to safely lift, carry, move, and handle tools, equipment, materials, and supplies consistent with the physical requirements of the position.
6. May be required to work adjusted schedules and respond outside normal working hours to snow and severe-weather events, school activities, emergency situations, building system failures, and other campus operational needs

++Qualifications++

1. High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school training preferred.
2. Demonstrated experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, construction, or a related field.
3. Working knowledge of general maintenance practices, tools, equipment, and materials, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, painting, and related trades.
4. Licensed trade credential or relevant technical certification in areas such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, locksmithing, sheet metal, or welding preferred.
5. Ability to read and interpret work orders, blueprints, manuals, specifications, safety procedures, and technical instructions.
6. Ability to troubleshoot building, equipment, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing problems and perform appropriate repairs within the scope of the position.
7. Ability to work independently, follow written and verbal instructions, maintain required records, and communicate effectively with Facilities staff and other members of the school community.
8. Ability to respond to emergencies, snow and severe-weather events, and other campus needs outside normal working hours when required.
