Job description

Position Title: Facilities & Maintenance Professional

Appointing Authority: Pastor(s)

Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to the Pastor and the Operations Manager

Employment Classification: Full-Time; Non-Exempt; 40 hours per week

Position Summary

The Facilities & Maintenance Technician is responsible for keeping the parish office, school, churches, grounds, and other parish buildings clean, safe, and in good working order. This position handles regular cleaning, general repairs, building and grounds maintenance, snow removal, preventive maintenance, and setup for parish and school activities. The employee should be dependable, able to work independently, and willing to help with a variety of maintenance needs as they come up.

Responsibilities
Building Maintenance
  • Perform general maintenance and repairs throughout parish and school buildings.
  • Take care of minor repairs such as doors, locks, hinges, shelves, fixtures, walls, and other building items.
  • Do basic painting, patching, caulking, and touch-up work.
  • Check buildings regularly for maintenance problems and report larger concerns to the Operations Manager.
  • Keep maintenance areas, tools, and supplies organized.
  • Help contractors and service providers when they are working on parish or school property.
Plumbing, Electrical & HVAC
  • Check plumbing fixtures, toilets, faucets, drains, water heaters, and exposed pipes for leaks or other problems.
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs when appropriate.
  • Replace light bulbs and perform other basic electrical maintenance as permitted.
  • Check lights, switches, outlets, and exterior lighting and report problems.
  • Check furnaces, thermostats, HVAC systems, and other heating and ventilation equipment to make sure they are operating properly.
  • Replace furnace and HVAC filters on a regular schedule.
  • Report problems with heating, cooling, plumbing, or electrical systems that require a licensed or specialized contractor.
Preventive Maintenance
  • Follow a regular maintenance schedule for parish and school buildings and equipment.
  • Walk through buildings and grounds regularly to look for problems before they become larger repairs.
  • Check furnaces, HVAC equipment, plumbing, lighting, doors, locks, windows, and other building systems.
  • Check mechanical rooms for leaks, unusual noises, odors, or other concerns.
  • Inspect gutters, downspouts, roofs, sidewalks, parking areas, and exterior areas for visible problems.
  • Check grounds and irrigation systems as needed.
  • Keep track of routine maintenance, filter changes, inspections, and repairs.
  • Let the Operations Manager know when repairs or maintenance need to be scheduled with an outside company.
Cleaning & Janitorial
  • Clean churches, parish offices, school areas, classrooms, restrooms, hallways, meeting rooms, and other assigned areas.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, sanitize, and clean surfaces as needed.
  • Empty garbage and recycling.
  • Clean and restock restrooms.
  • Keep entrances, doors, windows, and common areas clean.
  • Complete deep cleaning and seasonal cleaning when needed.
  • Keep cleaning supplies and equipment organized.
Grounds Maintenance
  • Keep parish and school grounds clean, safe, and presentable.
  • Pick up garbage, leaves, branches, and other debris around buildings, churches, parking lots, and grounds.
  • Use blowers, rakes, shovels, and other grounds equipment.
  • Help with lawn care, trimming, weed control, landscaping, and seasonal cleanup.
  • Keep sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, and outdoor areas in good condition.
  • Report problems with fencing, signs, trees, landscaping, irrigation, or other outdoor areas.
  • Perform minor outdoor repairs and maintenance as needed.
Snow & Ice Removal
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entrances, steps, parking areas, and other designated areas.
  • Use snow blowers, shovels, plows, and other snow-removal equipment.
  • Apply ice melt as needed.
  • Monitor snow and ice conditions and help keep buildings accessible and safe.
  • Assist with snow removal outside regular working hours when necessary.
Parish & School Events
  • Set up and take down tables, chairs, and other equipment for Masses, meetings, classes, funerals, weddings, receptions, and other events.
  • Help move furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Prepare rooms and buildings before events and clean up afterward.
  • Assist with parish and school projects, moves, renovations, and other facility needs.
  • Help with deliveries and moving supplies when needed.
Safety & Security
  • Watch for safety hazards, damage, leaks, or other problems in buildings and on parish grounds.
  • Keep entrances, exits, walkways, and emergency access areas clear.
  • Report safety, security, and maintenance concerns to the Operations Manager.
  • Properly use and store cleaning products, tools, and equipment.
  • Follow parish, school, diocesan, and safety policies.
  • Secure buildings, doors, gates, equipment, and storage areas as directed.
Qualifications
  • Experience in building maintenance, janitorial work, groundskeeping, construction, HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, or a related field is preferred.
  • General knowledge of building maintenance and repairs.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, heating, and HVAC systems is helpful.
  • Able to safely use hand tools, power tools, cleaning equipment, lawn equipment, and snow-removal equipment.
  • Able to recognize when a job needs to be handled by a licensed or qualified professional.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work without constant supervision.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to organize and prioritize work.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Willing to occasionally work evenings, weekends, holidays, or outside regular hours when needed.
  • Must complete a Safe Environment Training and renew annually.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Able to bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs, and work in smaller or confined areas.
  • Able to lift and carry supplies, equipment, furniture, and other items.
  • Able to operate maintenance, cleaning, grounds, and snow-removal equipment.
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors in different weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Work Environment

The Facilities & Maintenance Technician will work at the parish office, school, churches, grounds, parking areas, and other parish properties. The job includes both indoor and outdoor work and may involve cleaning products, dust, noise, equipment, mechanical rooms, and changing weather conditions. The employee may travel between parish and school locations during the workday.

Overall Responsibility

The Facilities & Maintenance Technician helps keep parish and school properties clean, safe, functional, and well-maintained. The employee is expected to notice problems, take care of routine maintenance and repairs, keep up with preventive maintenance, and communicate larger concerns to the Operations Manager.
